Summer Engineering Camps Wrap Up

Spring Valley held summer engineering camps for middle school boys (June 13-16) and for middle school girls (June 20-23).  Students had a lot of fun learning about engineering and robotics while working together on projects in teams.  They learned about (1) isometric sketching, electrical circuits, truss bridges, and gear ratios, (2) robot building, programming, and driving, and (3) engineering design, problem-solving, and teamwork.  For their final projects, they worked together on robots to compete in the VEX Nothing But Net game, and they competed with them on the final afternoon of the camps.

Spring Valley students enrolled in Mrs. Fowler's AP Calculus AB or Honors Calculus courses for the 2016-2017 school year should check their e-mail for a summer packet prior to the start of the school year. The assignments are optional but highly recommended.

Congratulations to Susan Adams

Congratulations to SVHS Media Specialist Susan Adams for being selected from pool of more than 300 applicants to participate in the Library of Congress Teaching with Primary Sources Summer Teacher Institute. Each year, the Library of Congress provides the opportunity for a carefully chosen group of K-12 educators to attend one of its five teacher institutes in Washington, D.C.

During the five-day program, participants work with Library education specialists and subject-matter experts to learn effective practices for using primary sources in the classroom, while exploring some of the millions of digitized historical artifacts and documents available on the Library’s website.

Educators attending the teacher institutes participate in and develop primary-source-based teaching strategies that they can take back to their school districts, apply in the classroom and share with colleagues. Teaching with primary sources is a powerful way to help students ask engaged, probing questions, develop critical-thinking skills and construct knowledge.

Annual Student Information Update

If you have not already done so, please login to Parent Portal to complete the annual student information update. It is important to complete this process before school gets out for the summer to prevent delays in your student’s registration for the 2016–2017 school year.

This process includes providing proof of residence, verifying student information and reviewing and completing parent or guardian agreements. If your student’s information has not changed from the previous school year, you still need to log into the system, confirm your information and review agreements that must be completed each year as required by policy or law.

Need help with this process? Click here for a detailed “how to.”

If you have any questions about the annual student information update process visit our Frequently Asked Questions page on our website or contact the registrar at your child’s school.

Spring Valley Accepted to TransformSC’s Statewide Network

Columbia, S.C. (May 31, 2016) – Spring Valley has been accepted to TransformSC’s network of innovative schools. There are now 51 TransformSC schools in 21 districts across the state.

“More and more schools are stepping up to the plate to lead innovation in our classrooms,” said Mike Brenan, co-chair of TransformSC and state president of BB&T.

“The rapid growth of the TransformSC network shows that our mission of better preparing students for success in careers and college is resonating with educators across the state,” said Pamela Lackey, state president of AT&T and co-chair of TransformSC. “We look forward to learning from and celebrating these new schools and their progress.”

To be accepted into the TransformSC network, the schools submitted a three-year innovation plan that is evaluated and approved by TransformSC’s Action Team Chairs and staff. TransformSC schools commit to create a culture of innovation in their schools and to implement some combination of TransformSC’s four innovative practices: project-based learning, blended learning, continuous assessment and competency-based progression, in order to transform learning and teaching for every student and every teacher in every classroom every day.

“Spring Valley shares in the vision of the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate put forth by the South Carolina Council on Competitiveness, and recognizes the need to create graduates with world class knowledge, world class skills, and personal characteristics which will serve them well in both their lives and their careers. The TransformSC network will assist us in doing this.”

TransformSC schools receive a variety of supports and opportunities through participation in the network, including access to national experts, mentorship opportunities with other innovative schools and assistance with the implementation of innovation plans.

TransformSC is accepting applications from schools with innovative approaches to achieving the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate for every student and every teacher in every classroom, every day. Schools at all levels and stages of development are encouraged to apply.

Marine Corps Educators’ Workshop

Each year Marine Corps recruiters invite high school educators, counselors, coaches and other influencers to visit Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, SC, to witness first-hand the Marine Corps' recruit-training program. Two educators from SVHS attended a recent workshop, MAJ Gregory Perry (JROTC) and Mrs. Margaret Bartlebaugh (math teacher). At the conclusion of the workshop, SSGT Sal (Marine Corps recruiter for SVHS) visited Mrs. Bartlebaugh’s classes to answer questions as she shared about the experience with her classes.

The four-day program began with a “welcome aboard” at the Depot’s famous Yellow Footprints and ended with viewing a recruit graduation. Along the way educators participated in some of the same exercises recruits experience during their 13-week training including sand pit drills, climbing up a rope wall, rappelling down a 47’ tower, firing at targets, and eating chow in the mess hall.

The program exposes educators to the many personal development, career, and educational opportunities available to today’s Marines. Workshop coordinators seek to dispel myths about recruit training and the Marine Corps’ mission by providing participants an experience that is truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

Seeing up close how Marines are made provides participants a basic understanding of the Marine Corps, better equipping educators to more effectively assist students in making informed decisions about military service.

Free Enterprise Leadership Challenge

Midlands Technical College will host the Jesse Helms Center’s Free Enterprise Leadership Challenge (FELC) at its Harbison Campus on June 27-30.  FELC is a five-day, learning intensive, non-residential summer camp that teaches important free enterprise principles, supports philanthropic efforts and encourages the creation of good character.

During the week, students create a company and a product to sell for a real profit.  At the end of the week, students have the option to split their profits or donate the funds to the non-profit organization Kiva.  Kiva is a microfinance website that allows donors to make loans to entrepreneurs in developing countries. FELC graduates have loaned and re-loaned over $45,000 to small business owners across the world.

"Going to the camp not only aroused an interest in me to learn more about the business sector in the economy but helped me make vital connections in both my economics and government class this year,” said Elexis Jenkins, a FLEC graduate.  “I appreciated how the camp brought abstract concepts to life in a fun and engaging manner. Leadership has always been a passion of mine and at the camp I was able to re-enforce this passion."

Students who participate in FELC programs:

Learn principled leadership skills;
Understand critical free enterprise principles;
Experience firsthand what it takes to run a successful business;
Increase their academic competitiveness with fun, interactive games and engaging breakout sessions.
The program is provided for high school students who will be rising sophomores, juniors or seniors in high school at the start of the 2016 and want to learn more about free enterprise through hands-on business experience.  Click here to sign up for the program.

Since 1995, the Helms Center has provided the affordable entrepreneurship education through FELC to over 8,300 students from 27 states and 14 countries.
