Girl Powered Robotics Event Held at Spring Valley

Middle and high school girls from around the district participated in an evening of hands-on robotics engineering activities from 4:30-7pm on Monday, October 24th. The event featured an array of engaging activities, speakers, giveaways and more to excite and further interest girls in STEM education and competitive robotics.

Tammy Vaught, mentor for Spring Valley's VEX Robotics Teams, organized and ran the Girl Powered event based on material provided for it by the Robotics Education & Competition Foundation in partnership with VEX Robotics.  Students from the Robotics Teams and the Technology Student Association helped by preparing the materials and working with the girls during the event.

At the event, the girls heard from speakers Patty Langland from SCDOT and Abby Vaught from A3 Communications, participated in a leadership activity, and engaged in a robotics speed build activity. They had a great time and learned a lot about leadership, STEM, and robotics.

Did you know...?

You can always check on your student's grades and attendance via Parent Portal.

2017-2018 Calendar Survey Reminder

This is a reminder to complete the 2017-2018 Calendar Survey that was e-mailed to you from Libby Roof on Tuesday.  The survey must be completed by 5:00 pm on Friday, October 29th.

Three drafts are marked "REGULAR" and two drafts are marked “WAIVER REQUIRED.” You will vote for one "REGULAR" calendar and one "WAIVER REQUIRED" calendar in the survey.

What does "waiver required" mean?
By law, South Carolina schools cannot start before the third Monday in August. Every year, parents, students and teachers ask how we can develop a calendar that would allow high school students to take first semester exams before Winter Break. A start date earlier than the third Monday in August would allow the district to complete 90 days of school before Winter Break. An early start date, however, requires a waiver from the South Carolina Board of Education.

Based on survey results, the preferred “REGULAR” calendar and the preferred “WAIVER REQUIRED” calendar will be presented to the Richland Two Board of Trustees at their November 15, 2016 meeting.

Your child has been issued a computing device this school year at Spring Valley High School. A prepaid device protection premium of $20 is required for all middle and high school students for the current school year. The premium is required, and if not paid, the student is assessed the full cost of repair or replacement for all incidents.

If the device protection plan is not paid by October 25, 2016, your child will continue to use the computing device; however, if the device is damaged, lost or stolen, the child will be responsible for the full cost of repair or replacement even in cases of theft with a police report.
  • Full Replacement Cost of a Chromebook for loss, theft or in cases where damage is so severe that repair is not cost effective is $310.05
  • A major repair charge for damage to the screen or system board is $150
  • A minor repair charge for damage to all other components, including broken plastics is $75
  • A lost or damaged power adapter is $25

Again, having the paid $20 protection plan covers the first incident of any of these listed repairs at no additional charge.

Yesterday Ms. Massey a teacher her at Spring Valley facilitated an amazing vision board lesson for the young ladies. The boards were filled with pictures, dreams, goals, quotes, affirmations, family, food, and fashion. Their vision boards helped them conceptualize their short and long-term goals for high school and beyond all in a fun way. The mentors even joined in on the fun.
