2016-2017 First Semester Exam Schedule

Exams are given during the final week of each semester.  All students are expected to take exams as scheduled -- exams cannot be taken early (in advance of the student’s assigned class).  Make-up exams may be given only under special circumstances which cause hardships such as surgery or death in the family (vacation plans, trips, etc. will not be considered as hardship situations.).  Make-up exams must be taken within three weeks after the original exam date. Written permission must be obtained from Dr. Silvernail to schedule a makeup exam. Approval to reschedule the exam does not excuse the absence. Students may not sign out of school during an exam period.

All students will be required to participate in the exam schedule. Seniors may exempt exams if they have 90% or above in a class (except End of Course Exams). Seniors should receive notification of exemption status by the Friday before exams.

Congratulations to our "TAG" Students

Every day, teachers, administrators, and counselors at Spring Valley look for students to "TAG". Students get TAGed by offering assistance to others, helping keep our school safe or clean, turning in lost and found items, good citizenship, being helpful to peers, or simply showing a little Viking pride. Each month, to show that we’re “Thinking of the Good Things You Do,” all TAG students will be recognized and will receive a token of appreciation from the school. Congratulations to the TAG students for the month of November!

SV AP Biology Presentations

The Spring Valley AP Biology students formally presented research they conducted on various types of cancer to fellow students, teachers and even district office personnel.

Their presentations helped simulate a more realistic experience of how research is presented in the scientific community. The experience also helped them hone their communication skills to both scientists and non-scientists. They did an fantastic job and were very professional!

JV Girls Basketball
The JV Lady Vikings defeated Westwood last night 47-29 after two losses to a very good RV JV Tea. The girls bounced back last night the viking way with hustle, tough defense and great team effort. We were lead in scoring by Kenadi Taylor with 19 pts, Zaliya Anthony added 11 pts, Alexis Mikell 7 pts, Maryah Lance 4 pts, Brilyn Davis, Deanna Etheridge and Brianna McCray 2 pts each. We will be back in action on Monday at Lexington 5:30 pm. Record 1-2

JV Boys Basketball
JV Boys won last night 26-24 to improve our record to 2-1. Our defense was the deciding factor in the win. Proud of the way the players never gave up and competed from start to finish. Our leading scorer last night was Maddox Harrell with 8 points, Antwaan Moore 6pts, Ja'Len Roberson 3pts, Joshua Felder 2pts, Cormon Grady 2pts, Micheal Neal 2pts, Leon Moore 2pts and Jairid Bowers 1pt.

B-Team Boy Basketball
B-Team suffered a tough lost last night to Westwood (24-44). They fought hard to the end and never gave up. Sayvon Jackson led the team with 10 points and 5 assists. Danny Evans and Jonathan Hafner played heavy on the boards and gave a great effort as well.

Valley vs Valley Old Timers Flag Football Bowl

Viking Gold eeked out the victory over Viking Green 35 - 28.  Jonathan Lawler led the way on defense, recording 15 tackles, swatting 5 passes and catching 3 tds on offense.  Maureen McKelvey was a rock on offense, keeping the ball moving with her 27 clutch catches, making defenders miss a league record 11 times and her Lombardi like play calls.  Stephen Cross was there.

For Viking Green, Lindsey was an offensive dynamo. Her yards from scrimmage record of 175 yards might stand the test of time.  Rafael Balcacer was the do-it-all type of player that coaches dream to have.  Viking Green's running game really benefited from his 4 pancake blocks and his overall blocking tenacity.  Rocket arm Stephen McKinney led his team with 4 td passes, but a questionable call to play him at receiver for the final play may have cost his team the victory.

Tune in next week . . .

Varsity Girls Basketball
The Lady Viking Basketball team made a valiant effort last night vs. the #8 ranked 4A team in SC, Westwood High School.  The game was tied through 3 quarters of play.  However, a tough 4th quarter propelled Westwood to victory with a final of 71-59.  Top performers were: Ashley Williamson with 18 points, Kristian Wall with 14 points, and Lauryn Taylor & Baylor Davis with 8 points a piece. The loss drops the Vikes to (3-2) on the season.  The coaching staff has been thoroughly impressed by the leadership being shown from a young group of underclassmen in a time of crucial adversity, that includes roster injuries.

The Lady Vikings will play Thursday night at AC Flora.  Tip off time is 6PM.  Region play begins at home next Tuesday, 12/13 vs. Lexington High School.

Boys Varsity Basketball
Our boys basketball team lost a tough game last night to Westwood 56-64.We are off to a slow start but our boys are playing extremely hard. I believe we will have a great season! our leading scorers: Rashaad Williams 20 points, Daeveon Davis 13, Julian Smith and ZaQuan Grant had 6 points each.

Please come support us Friday night at Ridge View as we play in the Bojangle Bash.

The Hour of Code

Today Mrs. Shelia Jones' Fundamentals of Web Page Design & Development classes participated in The Hour of Code 2016.

The Hour of Code is a global movement reaching tens of millions of students in 180+ countries to introduce the language of coding.  Coding has to do with the syntax, the fine details that allow a computer script to work. Think of coding as a spelling test where a sentence must have words correctly ordered with proper grammar and mechanics. If one single thing is wrong, then the grade on the spelling test decreases. Coding is similar; for if one thing is typed incorrectly, then the code won't work.

In class, each student chose a one-hour tutorial to complete. Once the student successfully completed the tutorial, students were able to print a Certificate of Achievement Award.

Spring Valley Gives the Gift of Life

During this time of year when blood donations drop off due to the holidays, students, faculty, staff and community members rolled up their sleeves to give blood. As part of our Winter Days Holiday Drive this year, the Science National Honor Society (SNHS) sponsored a Red Cross Blood Drive here at Spring Valley on Friday, December 2nd in the Auxiliary gym. Throughout the day student workers assisted with the blood drive by helping with snacks, sign-in and general support. Thanks to everyone for their blood donations.
