Zharia Casteal's poem "Bleeding Black Pride" has been accepted for publication for the next issue of Pegasus! This year marks the forty-fourth issue of the Pegasus, Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College's literary magazine. As a contributor she has been invited to their annual launch party, tentatively planned for Friday, April 28, 2017 at the Georgia Museum of Agriculture. Casteal was a student in Ms. Jennifer Bartell class. Congratulations !

Receive up to $2,500 to pursue a career or technical certificate/degree

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Have completed high school (or earned a GED)
  • Will be enrolled in eligible program in Fall 2017
  • Exhibit a strong commitment to pursue and complete a career or technical program at an accredited non-profit post-secondary institution in the United States
  • Demonstrated critical financial need (must be eligible to receive the Federal Pell grant as determined by completion of the FAFSA)
  • Demonstrated perseverance in overcoming adversity
  • Be under the age of 30
  • Be a United States citizen


Funds may be used for tuition, fees, books and supplies.  All scholarship funds are paid directly to the institution on behalf of the recipient.

The Lady Vikings Track & Field team had a great night, closing the Dual meet season with a win over West Florence 119-26 and Chesterfield 127-9.  Many of the girls really stepped up last night, running faster, jumping and throwing farther than they have all season. Please join me in congratulating the Lady Vikings on a job well done!

Spring Valley High School Named Quiz Bowl Team of the Week

Columbia, South Carolina: The Spring Valley High School Quiz Bowl A team was selected as the National Academic Quiz Tournaments High School Team of the Week for the week of March 18, 2017. The South Carolina State Championship was Spring Valley’s first tournament ever, but they made a tremendous debut, winning all but one of their seven preliminary games (and the loss, to Wade Hampton, was only by 10 points) and tying for fourth place overall. In doing so, they qualified for the High School National Championship Tournament — a short three-hour drive from home, in Atlanta.


Sophomore Isak Jatoi founded the team; he was joined on the inaugural A team by senior Anson Bidwell, junior Atifah Jatoi, sophomore Vikram Kumar, senior Breanna Murrin, and senior and leading scorer Rishishankar Suresh.

Blood Drive April 4th

The Science National Honor Society (SNHS) is sponsoring a Red Cross Blood Drive here at SV on Tuesday, April 4th. The blood drive will be from 8:00 am to 2:30 pm in the Auxiliary gym. Our goal is to collect 110 pints of blood, which could potentially help 330 individuals in the Midlands! All community members and parents are welcome, and encouraged, to donate! Mitch Uehling, owner of CiCi's Pizza, partnered with Spring Valley High School to recognize all of the Super Star students who made the "A" and "A/B" honor roll. The Freshman Academy of Spring Valley presented its "Cupcakes for Success" program. All freshmen had an opportunity to get a free cupcake if they made 77% or above in all their courses on their second quarter report card. Congratulations on a job well done!

Discovery Students Excel at the 2017 South Carolina Junior Academy of Science (SCJAS) Competition


This past Saturday, March 25th, fifty-three Discovery magnet students traveled to Coastal Carolina University in Conway, SC for the 2017 South Carolina Junior Academy of Science (SCJAS) meeting. Students competed with both written research papers and oral presentations by category. There were over 280 oral presentations. Our students earned forty-three awards. In addition, Casey Carter, Elizabeth Bickel, Elizabeth Dillon, Elaine Patterson, and Aman Pitalia each won first place in both the written paper and oral presentation divisions for his or her category. Congratulations to all of our Discovery students for their hard work and dedication. Also, a big congratulations and thank you to these students' research teachers, Dr. Bedlek-Anslow, Mr. Dale Soblo, and Mrs. Michelle Spigner, who spent hours reading research papers, helping with experiments, and encouraging students to persevere!

Congratulations to Spring Valley Winter Guard team on Saturday, they placed 3rd in the State CWEA (Carolina Winter Ensemble Association) Finals, which was held at Rock Hill high School.

State Championship Tournament, on March 18th. Team A had a spectacular preliminary round finishing with a 6-1 record. After the final round of competition, Team A finished tied for fourth place out of fifteen total teams and almost beat a national championship contender. Team B, a junior varsity team composed only of sophomores and freshmen, also performed well with Paul Dubberly (10) finishing in the top third in the individual competition. a full listing of tournament statistics can be found here

The Quiz Bowl club was founded this year by Isak Jatoi and has approximately twenty members. The team meets at lunch once per week to answer practice questions. Students interested in competing or joining the club this year or next year should contact Isak.

River Bluff 6, Spring Valley 5 - The softball team had a tough loss against a competitive River Bluff team.  Jade Mickle and Jourdan Bostic were both 2 for 4 in the game. Alexis Edgerton, Hannah Bostic, Cameron Cooper, Hunter Hayes, Molly Coleman, and Mary Beth Sullivan also contributed to our team’s 10 hits. 

Spring Valley 4, Irmo 1 - The Lady Vikings got another region win last night, improving their record to 3-2, and 4-6 overall.  Hunter Hayes was 2 for 3 with a double and a triple, while Jourdan Bostic was 1 for 3 with a 2 run HR. Bostic also pitched a complete game in the circle for us, allowing just two hits.  Next up for the Vikings is Dutch Fork this Friday at home.  Come out and support the team!

Richland Two's 4th Annual Film Festival - Night on the Red Carpet


We have had such incredible participation this year with over 90 submissions.  All students who submitted a video are invited to be at Spring Valley to show their creative work.  For the first 30 minutes, attendees can browse the student's work using QR codes and their cell phone.  At 6:30 we will move into the auditorium where we will showcase the top 3 videos in each category and present the winners with their award. Everyone across the district is invited to see our students' amazing work! Please RSVP!

2017 USC Region II Science and Engineering Fair Awards


Fifty-four Discovery students competed in the University of South Carolina Region II Science and Engineering Fair on March 10th, 2017. Each of these students did an outstanding job presenting his/her research to the judges from University of South Carolina, the United States Navy/Marine Corps, Fort Jackson, Congaree National Park, Westinghouse and many other professional organizations. Approximately 200 students from area high schools were interviewed by judges to determine the best of the submitted projects. Vinita Cheepurupalli was awarded the Silver Medal/Second place Grand Award.  Vinita was also chosen to compete in the International Sustainable World (Energy, Engineering, & Environment) Project Olympiad (I-SWEEEP) in Houston, TX in May. Please see the complete list of awards that our students earned.  Congratulations to all of our students, their families, and their research teachers, Dr. Joanne Bedlek-Anslow, Mr. Dale Soblo, and Mrs. Michelle Spigner on their outstanding work!

WorkKeys Testing Student Information:
All third year students will take the WorkKeys Assessment.  Report to your assigned testing room no later than 8:40 am. Testing will begin promptly after the bell rings.
Testing room assignments were sent to students at their school Gmail address.  All ACT testing will take place on the 3rd floor or in the Multi-Purpose Room.
Students who are testing should eat a good breakfast Wednesday morning.  Snacks will not be provided during the testing break.  If students need a snack during they testing break, they should bring it with them on Wednesday.  Students also need to bring two #2 pencils, their plastic student ID or driver's license (paper ID's cannot be accepted by WorkKeys), and their own calculator or a calculator they checked out from a math teacher today.  Off campus Juniors may not have time to leave campus for lunch after testing.

Non-Testing Student Information:
All non-testing students will report directly to the Main Gym Tuesday morning.  Non-testing students will hear from speaker David Jones from the Department of Public Safety-Highway Patrol about Distracted Driving.  After the speaker, students will participate team building/problem solving/communication activities in the Main Gym.

Congratulations to Jacob Brock

Congratulations to Jacob Brock ! He is only one of two students in the state of South Carolina who qualified as a USABO (USA Biology Olympiad) Semifinalist. The USA Biology Olympiad is the premiere biology competition for high school students in the United States.  The USA Biology Olympiad (USABO) enriches the life science education of nearly 10,000 talented students annually. It provides the motivation, curricular resources, and skills training to take them beyond their classroom experience to the level of international competitiveness. Jacob will now go on to take the Semifinal exam next week.

Girls Track & Field
It was a great weekend for the Lady Vikings Track & Field team with a 1st place team finish at the Silver Fox Invitational. Highlights from the Field events include a 2nd place finish by Morgan McLeod and 3rd place by Yvonne Thomas in the Pole Vault, Ikia Morgan 5th place and a tie for 6th (Raechal Sampson & Nyla Keough).  In the Triple Jump, we captured 3rd (Tori Ward), 6th (Danielle Miller) and 7th (Kanyah Stevenson). In the JV Long Jump Anaya Keough took 1st place and her twin sister Nyla Keough was 3rd.  Breha Fulford finished 6th in the Discus and 6th in the Shot Put. We also had Rebekah Bishop finishing 2nd and Janae Freeman 4th in the JV Shot Put.

On the track all 3 athletes placed in the 100m Hurdles with 1st place (Courtney Pratt), 3rd place (Chaylana Scott) and 5th (Morgan Roberts).  In the 100m dash, all 3 placed as well with 3rd place (Amaryah White), 6th (Kori Addison) and 7th (Tori Ward).  The JV 100m dash race was exciting as all 3 athletes also placed with Yvonne Thomas placing 2nd, Danielle Miller 4th, and Jonnica Fuller 6th.  Senior Gabrielle McGee finished strong in the 800m with a 3rd place finish and teammate Paige Waters finished 7th.  Freshman Mikayla Turner took a 1st place finish in the 400m and Ahja Amos finished in 4th place.  

In the 200m dash Freshman Amaryah White finished 1st and Mikayla Turner placed 4th.  All 3 athletes placed in the 400m Hurdles with Chaylana Scott winning 1st place, Jasmine Hughley right behind her for 2nd and Raechal Sampson 4th.  Danielle Murrin had a 7thplace finish in the 3200m. Finishing out with the relays the 4x800 took 3rd (Jasmine Hughley, Kaitlyn Froelich, Paige Waters, Gabrielle McGee), a 1st place finish in the 4x100 (Mikayla Turner, Danielle Miller, Tori Ward , Amaryah White), and the 4x400 (Amaryah White, Ahja Amos, Gabrielle McGee, Milayla Turner) took 2nd place to finish the meet.

Softball
Spring Valley 17, Irmo 7 - The Lady Vikings were able to get another region win Friday evening against Irmo.  We got off to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first.  Irmo quickly answered with a 3 run HR in the bottom half of the inning.  We scored 4 in the top half of the second, and maintained the lead from that point on.  We were led offensively by Alexis Edgerton (4-for-5: 2 singles, 1 double, 1 HR; 4 runs scored; 4 RBI’s), Hannah Bostic (3-for-5: 2 singles, 1 double; 2 runs scored; 3 RBI’s), Jade Mickle (3-for-5: 3 singles; 3 runs scored; 1 RBI) , and Jourdan Bostic (3-for-4: 1 single, 2 doubles; 1 run scored; 5 RBI’s). Other contributors were Hunter Hayes (1 run scored), Mary Beth Sullivan (3 runs scored; 1 RBI), and Tale’A Vicenty (2 runs scored). Molly Coleman pitched the complete game, getting the victory in the circle, and Mary Freeman played solidly behind the plate. Overall record moves to 3-5, with our region record at 2-1. Next up for the girls is a region match-up against River Bluff (at River Bluff) on Tuesday.  Wish the girls good luck!

FBLA State Leadership Conference

Our SV Future Business Leaders Leaders of America (FBLA) participated in the State Leadership Conference held this weekend, March 17-19th in Charleston, SC.  Our students landed in the top 10 in all of the categories in which they competed.  Two of our students, Zhane' Bradley and Taylor Jeter, progressed to the National Leadership Conference which will be held June 29-July 2nd in Anaheim, CA.  Let's congratulate the following FBLA members for representing SV very well and a very special thanks to our reporter, Keiyona Jordon, for covering this event.

HOSA Members win Top Honors at the 40th Annual State Leadership Conference


On March 8-10, 22 students and 3 advisors attended the 40th Annual SC State Leadership in Charleston SC. The conference was attended by almost 1500 students from across the state. It began and ended with vocal performances by SV students Shakthika Saravanan and Sarayu Parise.  The conference included a large competitive event component that boasts strong competition and 44 different events. 11 of our students placed 1st, 2nd or 3rd in their event and are now eligible to compete at the International Leadership Conference (ILC) in Orlando, Florida (June 20-25). Two additional students placed in the top 5 in their event. In addition, students were honored for their academic accomplishments and community service. Mrs. Lorie McDuffie (advisor) was recognized for her service to local, state and national HOSA by being named the SC HOSA Advisor of the year. The results are as follows:
