The Shahani Scholarship



This scholarship is given to honor and celebrate the formative impact that Spring Valley High School had on the academic success of Ashwin Shahani. Five Shahani Scholarships of $5000 each will be awarded to the Spring Valley High School class of 2020. The scholarship funding is designated to be used for on-campus room and boarding expenses.

Dr.Shahani is a 2008 graduate of the Spring Valley High School Discovery program and is currently an Assistant Professor at the University of Michigan. Ashwin joined the University of Michigan as Assistant Professor in September 2016. He earned his B.S. from Cornell University and his Ph.D. from Northwestern University, both degrees in the field of Materials Science and Engineering. It is at Northwestern, that Ashwin developed his passion for solidification science.

Recipients must have a GPA of 3.5 and should demonstrate that they could benefit financially from the scholarship. Applicants will attach an essay of 2000 words or less. In the first essay, the applicant should describe their career ambitions and in the second essay, the applicant should describe their outreach and leadership activities.

One Teacher or faculty recommendation is required and should be used to substantiate your eligibility for each applied scholarship and your personal commitment to education.

The committee will conduct interviews with applicants as a final stage in the decision process.

Highlights include presentations from NAMI Mid-Carolina delegates, showcases of student art relating to mental health celebration, and performances by talented student musicians. Six Spring Valley Discovery Seniors Named Presidential Scholar Candidates

Vamsi Gorrepati, Pranav Guntupalli, Jareer Imran, Pallavi Rao, Amal Verma, and Alyssa Williams have been selected as candidates for the 2020 U.S. Presidential Scholars Program, one of the nation’s highest honors for high school students.

Each of these Discovery students has excelled while at Spring Valley High School. 


Vamsi Gorrepati is a senior at Spring Valley High School in the Discovery magnet program. He has done research on tailoring Metal-Organic Frameworks to increase semiconductors' efficiency. Vamsi is also a part of Circle of Friends, HOSA, Mu Alpha Theta, National Honor Society, and Key Club. In Vamsi's free time, he enjoys photography, 3D printing, and hiking. In college, he plans on majoring in Biology. 









Pranav Guntupalli is a member of the Discovery Magnet program and has done research on the optimization of algal-based biofuels. He is a part of the National Honor Society, VEX Robotics team, and Technology Student Association. In college, he plans on studying Chemical Engineering with an emphasis on Energy and the Environment.











Jareer Imran is a Discovery magnet program student and National Merit Finalist. He splits his time between Cross Country, Track and Field, and Quiz Bowl, among other clubs. He is also the founder of Vikings for Humanity, a club dedicated to raising awareness and donations for the cause of refugees. He enjoys creative writing in his free time and plans to study Biochemistry in college.







Pallavi Rao is a member of the Discovery magnet program and is currently serving as South Carolina State HOSA President. She is also a student body officer, and Winter Days senior chair, leading the school's largest student-run service project. She is president of Mu Alpha Theta (Math Honor Society), part of the National Honor Society and Science National Honor Society, and is Editor-in-Chief of the Green & Gold literary magazine. In college, she hopes to study global health









 Amal Verma is a senior at Spring Valley High School and a National Merit Finalist. He is part of the Discovery Magnet Program, Technology Student Association, Mu Alpha Theta (Math Honor Society), and the National Honor Society at his school. In college, he looks forward to studying Computer Science.  















Alyssa Williams is a Discovery magnet student who enjoys computer science and engineering. She serves as the state Sergeant-at-Arms for the Technology Student Association, and as an officer in the National Honor Society. She is also a member of the National Spanish Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta (Math Honor Society), Science National Honor Society, Quiz Bowl, and Rho Kappa (Social Studies Honor Society). In her free time, she enjoys reading and coding.

2020 SCBDA Region Band and All-State Band


Congratulations to 33 of our fine band students for following through with a rigorous audition process to earn seats in the All-State and Region Three Bands. Region Auditions were held on Saturday, January 11th in the six regions to determine who would place highest in their section and qualify to audition on January 25th for the All-State Band. Each student was required to perform: 
  • All 12 diatonic scales correctly in multiple octaves within two minutes.
  • Their Chromatic Scale for the required range of the instrument.
  • The state assigned solo.
  • Two sight-reading examples with 30 seconds given to study prior to playing.
  • Music Terms Definitions Quiz.
Region Band Clinic will take place at Nation Ford High School on February 21st & 22nd, with the concerts the afternoon and evening of the 22nd. All-State Band Clinic will take place during SCBDA State Professional Development at Furman University on March 13th-15th, with the performances on the evening of the 15th.

Congratulations Brandon Gibbs!


Congratulations to Brandon Gibbs on earning The Congressional Award Gold Medal. Brandon received this award for voluntarily helping others in his community and his achievements in personal development, physical fitness and expedition/exploration. Requirements are to obtain 400 hours of community service, 200 hours of personal initiatives and personal development, 200 hours of physical fitness and initiate and plan expeditions and explorations. He will be recognized at the Annual Gold Medal Ceremony in Washington, D.C. this summer. The Congressional Award is the Congress' highest honor for youth and we are so proud of all you have accomplished.

Spring Valley JROTC Wins Again!


Our Viking JROTC teams had a triumphant weekend on two university campuses. The Spring Valley JROTC Raider Team withstood a grueling 3-hour, 10-event during the annual Paladin Raider Competition at Furman University, The Viking Raider Team as the only USAF team represented during the competition bested 9 other teams to finish 2nd overall in the competition. This was the highest finish by a Spring Valley JROTC Raider Team.

The Viking Drill Team competed in the annual Low Country Drill Meet hosted by Charleston Southern University on Saturday, 22 February. Out of 10 possible events, the Drill Team placed in 9 events, and finished in 1st place in 6 of those 9 events, to finish in 1st place overall. This was Spring Valley's 4th time finishing 1st overall in 4 competitions. The Viking Drill Team will compete again in Irmo on 21 Mar at 0900.
