France Trip Parent Info Meeting Thursday

Do you love travel?  Ancient Roman history? WWI or WWII history?  Art?  Paris? The French language?  If you said "yes" to any of these, you will love our 2015 Journey to France in June.

Travelers do NOT have to be French students to participate!  Anyone who is interested is invited to attend our meeting this week on Thursday, January 22 in room E-325. The meeting will take place from 5pm until 6pm.

About our tour:

This is a custom designed trip that will appeal to those who wish to truly absorb the atmosphere in each location.  We'll see beautiful cities of Provence, tour vestiges of antiquity in the south of France, travel by TGV to Strasbourg, and finally finish our tour in Paris.

About our teacher travelers:

-Mr. Ugro was born and educated in Romania. For the past twenty years he has taught Latin, Greek, and French in Romania, England, and the US.

-Dr. Lars Seiler was born and raised in Germany, and has traveled widely through France and southern Germany.  His research and teaching interests include European cultural and social history of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

-Mrs. Stephens studied French at the University of South Carolina Honors College and Graduate School and has taught French at Spring Valley High School for eight years.  This will be her sixth trip to France.

Foundation Auction Coming Soon!!!

On Saturday, February 28, 2015, the Spring Valley Education Foundation will hold its 29th Annual Auction, "Chinese New Year!" to benefit Spring Valley High School.  The auction will be at The Tennis Center at The Members Club at Wildewood beginning at 6:00 PM. This always festive and fun evening will include a wide selection of both live and silent auction items, terrific food, and a host of 300 – 350 parents, family, faculty, community neighbors and other friends of Spring Valley High School. Your support is crucial in helping Spring Valley continue to offer a nationally recognized, top-notch education to every student, and to remain a major asset to the Northeast Columbia community. Applications Now Open for National Technical Honor Society

What is NTHS?

The National Technical Honor Society is a non-profit, honors, service organization for students enrolled in occupational, vocational and technical programs.  The mission of NTHS is to honor student achievement and leadership in career and technical education, promote educational excellence, award scholarships, and enhance career opportunities for the NTHS membership.

HOW DO I BECOME A MEMBER OF NATIONAL TECHNICAL HONOR SOCIETY?

To become a member of the NTHS, students must meet the following criteria:

• Second Semester Sophomore, Junior or Senior
• Currently enrolled in a second level CATE course or successful completion of two CATE courses in the same program of study 
• Overall GPA of 3.0 or higher 
• Grade of A or B in your technical class or special recognition (student of the quarter, etc.)
• Faculty and/or staff recommendations 
• Active involvement in a school organization
• No major discipline problems

Full time students inducted as NTHS members are eligible to apply for scholarships through NTHS.org.

Young Investors Club Welcomes Guest Speaker

The Young Investors Club welcomed Mr. Daniel Parga from Palmetto Citizens Bank.  Mr. Parga spoke to the class about traditional and Roth IRA accounts. He also spoke to them about the importance of investing young and early. Mr. Parga shared information with them about the most appropriate IRA account for young people to invest into as well.  

"TAG" Students

Every day, teachers, administrators, and counselors at Spring Valley look for students to "TAG." Students get TAGed by offering assistance to others, helping keep our school safe or clean, turning in lost and found items, good citizenship, being helpful to peers, or simply showing a little Viking pride. Each month, to show that we’re “Thinking of the Good Things You Do,” all TAG students will be recognized and will receive a token of appreciation from the school. Congratulations to the TAG students for the months of  November and December! 

Congratulations to the SV Orchestra Program

Congratulations to the Spring Valley High School orchestra program! Members of the Chamber, Concert, and String Orchestras will perform, as a special orchestra, for the 2015 South Carolina Music Educators In-Service Conference. The conference will be held here in Columbia at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center, on February 5th through 8th. The orchestra will perform on Friday, February 6th at 1:00 pm in Salon A of the Convention Center. Spring Valley's orchestra was the only high school orchestra in the state selected to perform at this year's conference! Please congratulate the students on this wonderful honor! Thanks for your support of the Spring Valley High School orchestra program!
