Spring Valley High School has been named by The Washington Post as one of America’s Most Challenging High Schools in the nation. According to the Post, “America's Most Challenging High Schools ranks schools through an index formula that's a simple ratio: the number of Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate and Advanced International Certificate of Education tests given at a school each year, divided by the number of seniors who graduated that year. A ratio of 1.000 means the school had as many tests as graduates.” Of approximately 27,000 U.S. high schools, fewer than 7 percent qualified for this recognition, and Spring Valley is one of only 14 South Carolina schools to make the list. With its offering of 21 Advanced Placement courses, Spring Valley High School’s AP program is one of the most comprehensive in South Carolina. In 2012, 323 students were enrolled in at least one AP course. As a result of the 572 tests that were administered, 87% of students scored a 3 or higher.
