Coach Jerry Brown Named the 2015 Shrine Bowl Head Coach

Spring Valley Head Football Coach, Dr. Jerry Brown, has been named as the head coach of South Carolina for the 2015 Shrine Bowl. This was announced at the 2014 Shrine Bowl game on Saturday. Coach Brown has won 8 SC State Football Championships, 5 of those coming as a head coach at 3 different schools. His last state championship was in 2013 as the head coach of Batesburg-Leesville High School. Coach Brown has returned to Spring Valley where he won the state championship in 2008 and had a winning season this past year. Congratulations to Coach Brown for being named the 2015 Shrine Bowl head coach.

2015 Lacrosse Interest Meeting

On Monday, January 12th at 4 pm in the weight room classroom, there will be an informational meeting for those interested in joining the boys lacrosse team for the 2015 season.

Spring Valley Students Get Presentation on Ebola

Mrs. Keisha Berry is on the Ebola team at Palmetto Health Richland hospital. She gave a presentation on how Ebola affects the body, how it is transmitted, and how healthcare professionals prepare for and treat all potential Ebola patients.  She demonstrated, using student volunteers, how healthcare professionals (doctors, nurses, etc) put on and take off their personal protective equipment (including the suit, gloves, and head gear). Thanks Mrs. Berry for taking the time out of your busy schedule to talk with us.

SV National Honor Society Students Spread Holiday Cheer

Students in Spring Valley National Honor Society and faculty combined to bring cheer to the school's custodial staff.   For the second year the NHS students collected gifts and created gift bags for the school's custodians to thank them for their service to the school and to wish them a happy holiday season.

The varsity wrestling team traveled to Laurens High School last night to compete in two dual meets. The team fell to Laurens by a score of 41-29 before rebounding to defeat Greenwood 59-23.  The team record moves to 7-2 as they travel this weekend to Hartsville for a team tournament.

Thanks to our Culinary Arts Students

T'Keyah Burgess and Jonathan Williams, Culinary Arts 1 students, set up and served refreshments at the faculty meeting on December 15th. Ms. Formyduval's Culinary Arts classes prepared the decorated cupcakes, cheese and fruit trays, and fruit punch for the event.

November ASVAB Results

If you took the ASVAB in November and would like help interpreting your score report or have any questions for recruiters, join me in the CIC during lunch tomorrow (Thursday, December 18th). Recruiters will be on hand to answer questions and help you understand your results.

Registration for Free SAT Workshop

The Spring Valley Education Foundation is offering 2 FREE SAT Workshops this spring. The SAT workshops will be held on Saturday, January 17, 2015 or Saturday, February 28, 2015. Students may only sign up for one workshop. We will take the first 150 students who sign up for each date. The workshop will be held in the Spring Valley Auditorium from 8:00am-12:15pm. Students or parents need to complete the registration for the Free SAT Workshop.

Transcript Request Before Winter Break

Seniors, the last day to request a transcript to be sent through Parchment before the winter break is Friday, December 19th at 1:00 p,m. Transcript requests received after this time will not be processed until January 5th, 2015. Please be aware some colleges and scholarships have a January 1st deadline. Our offices will be closed. Submit your requests by noon Friday, Dec 19th.

On Tuesday the varsity girls got off to a slow start but rallied to make the game a toss-up in the closing seconds. Nevertheless, the Vikings fell short of a win. Megan Davis led all SV scorers with 14 points. Christian Hithe tallied a double with 10 points and 14 rebounds. The Lady Vikings hope to get back to their winning ways in the District 9 Christmas Tournament in Sumter, S.C. on Dec. 26th.

Our varsity boys took a tough loss to Irmo last night. 76-87. Our leading scoring came from Marcus Holloway with 16 points, Malik Dunbar 13, Noah Harper 12, Jaylan Robinson 10, Israel Wall 7 and KJ Legette with 6. Please come support us as we play in the Chick-Fil-A Tournament this weekend at RNE.

SV Students Participate in the Coastal Carolina University Honor Band & Scholarship Festival

Spring Valley High School Band members Ethan Dilley, Dennis Patterson, Christian Scott, Alex Whitson, and Zach Whitson were recently selected to participate in the 8th annual Coastal Carolina University Honor Band & Scholarship Festival. The festival was held on the CCU campus on December 4-6, 2014. These students were among 150 high school students invited to campus for a three day event with guest clinicians and conductors. Students were placed by a competitive audition process into the Festival Wind Ensemble or the Coastal Honor Band.

These students had the opportunity to work with other talented musicians from across the state, and performed a variety of musical selections  with Quincy Hilliard, Composer in Residence and the Heyman Endowed Professor of Music at the University of Louisiana, and Jeff Ball, founder, artistic director, and conductor of the Brooklyn Wind Symphony. 

Congratulations to these young men, they represented Spring Valley very well!

Hello Everyone, if you did not make to the game Saturday night you missed a good game, and for those who came out I believe they got their money's worth. Sorry we didn't get the victory for you. We lost to Hammond 68 to 94 This brings our record to 4-1. Our leading scoring came from PJ Dozier with 31 points and 17 rebounds. Also Jaylon Roberson had 11, Malik Dunbar had 10. KJ Legette and Israel Wall both added 2 points each. Despite our lost I believe we have a championship team this year so please come support your Viking Basketball Team!

On Saturday the Lady Vikings rallied to hold off a determined Hammond team .With the largest crowd ever at the Valley, the team shook off some early game jitters to pull off the victory. Clutch free throw shooting late in the game by senior Megan Davis proved invaluable in sealing the victory.
Four players scored in double figures. Shantay Taylor tallied another double double with 16 points and 12 rebounds and 3 blocked shots .Megan Davis scored 15 points and grabbed 5 rebounds. Christian Hithe had 13 points and 9 rebounds .Akia Dunlap followed with 11 points and 8 rebounds. 
The Lady Vikings wish to thank our Spring Valley Family for coming to the game and cheering loudly for our victory! A special thanks to Athletic Director Tim Hunter for putting the excitement together and the administration, security and all personnel who helped to make it a fun, safe and successful Saturday! You gotta be proud to be a Viking!

Varsity Wrestling
The varsity wrestling team finished 8th out of 18 teams at the Silver Fox Invitational Wrestling Tournament this weekend. The team was led by outstanding performance and 195 pound championship by sophomore Jordan Stiffler while senior Sam Bell finished 3rd and sophomores Kyle Coward and Mac Simpson placed 4th. The team travels Wednesday to Laurens to wrestle three matches followed by the Red Fox Duals in Hartsville on Saturday.

Touchstone Energy North-South All Star Football Game was played this past Saturday. Senior Ja'Lon Williams, defensive lineman, had 3 tackles and 1 sack for minus 10 yards. Senior Tyler Frazier, strong safety, had 3 tackles and 1 caused fumble. Both of these men had outstanding games and did a great job representing Spring Valley High School. Senior Jordan Williams will be playing in the NC/SC Shrine Bowl this Saturday, December 20th at Wofford Stadium.

Boys Soccer Interest Meeting

Any boys interested in playing soccer this year must attend a mandatory meeting with Coach Clark on Tuesday, December 16th after school in Coach McKinney's room, D-104.  We will have normal practice after the meeting.

Congratulations Alsena Edwards

Mrs. Alsena Edwards, Career Prep lead teacher, ran the Kiawah Island Marathon on Saturday, December 13th. She placed 3rd in her division, with a time that qualifies her to run in the Boston Marathon in 2015. Way to go!

Financial Aid 101 - Free Informational Workshop @ SV

Spring Valley High School will host a Free informational workshop entitled “Financial Aid 101” in January. It is open to all college-bound high school seniors and their parents and will cover financial aid, the importance of the FAFSA, how to correctly complete the FAFSA form, how to handle unique situations such as divorce and guardianship, options for paying the remaining college bill, and much more. 

The workshop will be held on Tuesday, January 13, 2015 at 6:30 PM in the Spring Valley Auditorium and will last about 90 minutes.

Hour of Code: Students Introduced to VEX Robotics & ROBOTC Programming

Students got an introduction to VEX robotics and ROBOTC programming during their Hour of Code in Introduction to Engineering Design.  Students first connected the limit switch, motor, and LED to the VEX cortex.  Then they wrote a program in ROBOTC to use the limit switch to control the motor and the LED.  When they pressed the limit switch the first time, the motor would start and the green LED would turn on.  When they pressed the limit switch a second time, the motor would stop and the green LED would turn off.  Students really enjoyed the combination of programming and robotics.

The JV Lady Vikings defeated Northwestern 36-33 last night with a great team effort.  We were lead in scoring by Fredi Pritchett with 16 points, Sabrina Martinez 15 points, Ebony Graham 4 points and Christian Wall 1 point.  The Lady Vikings will be back in action on Monday, Dec. 15 at Home vs Irmo at 5:30 p.m.

The Lady Vikings stepped up their team effort against Northwestern on Tuesday night. Shantay Taylor tallied a double double  with 12 points and 13 rebounds. Bayleigh Ponds contributed 11 points and 5 rebounds followed by Akia Dunlap with 10 points and 7 rebounds. Megan Davis added 4 assists. Overall record is 4-2. The next game is Saturday at 6:00 against Hammond.

Congratulations to our varsity boys basketball team for there victory over Zion Lutheran High School from Florida, in the Bojangles Bash, 74 to 67. Our leading scorers were, Malik Dunbar with 26, Jaylan Robinson 20, Kenneth "KJ" Legette 14. Perry "PJ" Dozier 6. Our record is 4-0. Please continue to support our Vikings. B-Team had a good win in their home opener last night against Northwestern High School. The final score was 62-46. We got off to a fast start and maintained the control throughout game. The leading scorer in the game was Jamal Williams with 17 points. Other scorers in the game were; Lincoln Smith (10), Darius Cohen (9), Alex Haigler (7), Mike Simmons (6), Montrey Middleton (6), Rashaad Williams (4), Justin McKie and Austin Eichelberger also added points. Great defensive game by all. Our next game is Monday, December 15th at home against Irmo High School at 6:45 pm.

SVHS Media Center is in the Holiday Spirit

Thanks to our wonderful Spring Valley students, guest are greeted upon entering the Media Center with a beautifully decorated tree. Students are encouraged to stop by the Media Center to enjoy the holiday decor and read a good book! 

Students Participate in Hour of Code

Mrs. Sumter’s Web Design and Development class along with Dr. Rodger’s Engineering Design classes are participating in The Hour of Code on Thursday, December 11th. The Hour of Code is a global movement reaching millions of students in 180+ countries for Computer Science Education Week (December 8-14). This movement across the country is an introduction to computer science.  It was designed to translate coding and programming to create gaming, animations, and web design.

MAN UP Members Support Deployed Fort Jackson Unit

The Vikings' MAN UP mentoring program prepared care packages for a deployed Fort Jackson unit. The theme for the month is community.  The young men wanted to let the soldiers know their community is thinking of them during the holiday season and appreciate their commitment to keeping both their community and country safe.

The College Board will provide an incentive for students who complete the test. Specifically, students will be paid a $25 gift card. Each participating school will be sent a shipment of gift cards and a list of students who completed the test approximately 16 weeks after the test date.

On Tuesday the Lady Vikings put together an impressive defensive effort and defeated the Sumter Lady Gamecocks. Leading in takeaways were Akia Dunlap, Christian Hithe, Megan Davis, and Shantay Taylor with 2 each. Dominique Hill followed with one steal. Christian Hithe was the top scorer with 17 points followed by Shantay Taylor with 12. Akia Dunlap was the leading rebounder with 7. Next up is Northwestern at Home on Thursday @ 7:15. The Lady Vikings are 3-2 on the season.

Culinary Arts Students Prepare Lunch for API Meeting

The Culinary Arts students prepared lunch for the API meeting hosted by Dr. Silvernail, SVHS Assistant Principal, on December 9 at SVHS. The menu included Lasagna, Seven Layer Salad, Bread, Cherry Yum Yum and Iced Tea. Each guest received a Gingerbread Man Cookie made and decorated by the Culinary Arts students as a take home gift. Horace Canzater, Elizabeth Horne, Jordan Seeger, Gabrielle Smyrl, and Ms. Theresa Formyduval, Culinary Arts teacher, served the meal their class prepared for the guests. 

VEX Robotics Competition

Spring Valley's Robotics Team (120E: Green & Gold Robotics) competed in the CATS Midlands Qualifier on Saturday, December 6th.  Green & Gold Robotics placed 9th in the qualifying round, and joined an alliance with Wolf Pack and The Red Hot Ooompa Loompas for the championship round. The alliance won their quarterfinal match but lost their semifinal match. Way to go!

SV vs Hammond Basketball Game

SV vs Hammond basketball game tickets are still on sale in the Spring Valley Main Office. Cost is $10.00 per ticket and less than 100 tickets remain. The game will be Saturday, Dec 13th with the girls at 6:00 and the boys at 7:30. No season passes or district passes will be accepted. Only SCHSL and SCISA passes will be honored.

2015 Journalism Contest

The JV Lady Vikings defeated Sumter 36-19 last night.  It was a great team effort.  We were lead in scoring by Fredi Pritchett with 13 points, Ebony Graham added 9 points, Tiara Sumpter 6 points, Sabrina Martinez 4 points, Kamryn Beaman 3 points and Alayna White 1 point. The Lady Vikings will be back in action @ home on Thursday @ 6:00 pm.   

B-Team Boys Basketball
B-Team had another good win last night to continue the good start of the season, winning 31-57 at Sumter High School. We got in foul trouble early in the game, but our defense held strong to never lose our edge in the game. The leading scorer in the game was Rashaad Williams with 12 points. Other scorers in the game were; Jamal Williams (11), Justin McKie (10), Mike Simmons (9), Darius Cohens (7), Alex Haigler (4), and Lincoln Smith (4). Great all around team effort. Our next game is Wednesday at home against Northwestern High School at 6 pm.

JV Boys Basketball
We lost another close one that went down to the last second. The final score was 38-40. We were lead in scoring by Axel Alicea with 8pts, Zaquan Grant, Noah Guyton and Daveon Davis each had 6 pts to be the second leading scorers for the night.

Wrestling (Saturday)
The wrestling program hosted the Midland Dual Challenge and JV/Middle School Capitol Clash this Saturday.  All those that competed did a great job.  The varsity team finished the event with four wins to only one loss, pushing our season record to 6-1.  The team led by sophomores Kyle Coward, Jordan Stiffler and junior Tyler Bacon, all finishing the day 5-0, defeated Hartsville Airport, Voyager Academy(NC) and Lower Richland before losing a close match to Columbia High School. The team is next in action at Dutch Fork on Friday and Saturday for the annual Silver Fox Invitational.

"TAG" Students

Every day, teachers, administrators, and counselors at Spring Valley look for students to "TAG." Students get TAGed by offering assistance to others, helping keep our school safe or clean, turning in lost and found items, good citizenship, being helpful to peers, or simply showing a little Viking pride. Each month, to show that we’re “Thinking of the Good Things You Do,” all TAG students will be recognized and will receive a token of appreciation from the school. Congratulations to the TAG students for the month of October! 

SV National Honor Society Raises Funds for the Fistula Foundation

The SV National Honor Society raised $500 though a cookie sale to support the work of the International Fistula Foundation.   The money will be used to provide emergency medical care to young women in sub-Saharan African countries, like Ethiopia, of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where women who suffer from obstetric fistulas have a difficult time to receive medical treatment.  A surgery to repair a fistula costs $450.

SVEF 29th Annual Auction Planning Meeting

Lost a close one to Northwestern 33-34. Zaquan Grant lead all scorers with 10pts.  Julian Smith and Keandre Jones were the second leading scorers with 6pts each.

Robin Bacon Has Been Selected to Coach in the 11th Annual Max Emfinger All-American Classic Bowl

Congratulations to Robin Bacon who has been selected to coach in the 11th Annual Max Emfinger All-American Classic Bowl. The game will be played at the University of Louisiana-Lafayette’s Rajin’ Cajun Stadium on January 3, 2015. Players from the East Team will represent states such as NC, SC, GA, TN. IL, FL and AR. Players selected from the West Team will represent states such as CO, UT, OK, CA and TX. The founder of the bowl, Max Emfinger, began the very first high school recruiting service in 1979. It has been Max’s mission to identify quality high school football players from across the nation and showcase their talents in this annual bowl game. Way to go Coach! Click here for more details.

Look for Spring Valley's very own Desiree Ross starring alongside country music legend Dolly Parton in A Country Christmas Story on Lifetime this Sunday, December 7th, at 11:00 AM. Previously, Ross also guest starred in Falling Skies on TNT. Way to go Desiree! We'll be watching.

Donations may be brought to the school any day and placed in our Winter Days box located at the front desk.  Also, students will be on hand to receive donations directly from cars in the drop off/carpool line on Tuesday, November 24th, Wednesday, December 3rd, Wednesday, December 10th, and Wednesday, December 17th. All of the donations and proceeds will go to our recipient agencies such as, Toys for Tots, Transitions, God's Storehouse, Hannah House, Epworth Children’s Home, the Carolina Women’s Shelter and Oliver Gospel Mission. Sanjay Ravindra Aces ACT


Spring Valley Sophomore Sanjay Ravindra earned the highest possible composite score of 36 on the October ACT. Nationally, while the actual number of students earning a composite score of 36 varies from year to year, on average, less than one-tenth of 1 percent of students who take the ACT earn the top score. Among test takers in the high school graduating class of 2014, only 1,407 of nearly 1.85 million students earned a composite score of 36. Way to go Sanjay!



Giving the Gift of Life

During this time of year when blood donations drop off due to the holidays, students, faculty, staff and community members rolled up their sleeves to give blood. As part of our Winter Days Holiday Drive this year, the Science National Honor Society (SNHS) sponsored a Red Cross Blood Drive here at Spring Valley on Tuesday, December 2nd in the Auxiliary gym. Throughout the day student workers assisted with the blood drive by helping with snacks, sign-in and general support. Thanks to everyone for their blood donations.
