SAT Test Prep with Sylvan

Culinary Arts Students Enjoy Johnson and Wales Presenter
Chef Nicholas Whittington, Culinary Presenter for Johnson and Wales University, was the guest speaker and presenter for all of Theresa Formyduval's Culinary Arts classes on December 16, 2015. With the help of students, he prepared Szechwan Spiced Israeli Couscous which the students ate. He also talked about his experiences as a personal and private chef as well as educational opportunities and financial assistance for students at Johnson and Wales University. Pictured is Derek Jones, Culinary Arts student, helping Chef Whittington prepare the vegetables and using the wok to prepare the recipe.

Today the students in Spring Valley's chapter of NHS continued their new annual tradition of thanking the school's custodial staff for their diligence and effort with gift bags, The students' generosity in thought and action is always inspiring.

The Lady Vikings defeated Irmo 68 to 42!!
Leading scorers for the Lady Vikings were Christian Hithe with 19 points, Shantay Taylor with 14 points, and Anaja Matthews with 11 points including 3 threes. Joi Jones had 6 points and 8 rebounds. Point guard Dominique Hill had 6 assists and 10 deflections on defense. Christian Hithe posted a Double-Double adding 12 rebounds to her 19 points. Shantay Taylor posted her 4th Double-Double by adding a career high 20 rebounds to her 14 points. Freshman, Taylor Lewis, had 7 rebounds and 3 blocks. The Lady Vikings will play at home after the winter break. Happy Holidays!!

JV Girls Basketball
The JV Lady Vikings defeated Irmo last night 38-26. It was a great team effort on defense. We had several contributors on offense. Tykiera Wiley with 10 pts, Destiny Coleman 8 pts, Kenadi Taylor 5 pts, Shalyn Jacobs, Alexis Mikell and Tiara Sumpter added 4 pts each, Kamryn Beaman 2 pts and Malaysia Irby 1 pt. We will be back in action after the break onJanuary 5 @ Home vs White Knoll at 6:00 pm.
B-Team Boys Basketball
B-Team lost to Irmo last night 24 - 27. It was a close hard fought defensive game. At the end we battled and just fell a little short. The leading scorer was Jairid Bowers with 9 points. Our next game is Wednesday at Sumter.
JV Boys Basketball
We got our revenge last night on the road against Irmo 46-40, the team who beat us in our season opener. It was a total team effort. We played great defensively putting full court pressure on them and causing turnovers which we converted into easy baskets for us. We never lose the lead the whole game and kept our composure despite a late run by Irmo. Freshman Antwann Moore led our team in scoring with 11pts, Darius Cohens 9pts, JaCobie Elkiins 6pts, Qymaine Sanders 6pts, Nicolas Doctor 5pts, and Quincy Hill and Montray Middleton both had 3pts. It was our last game of this year and we're looking forward to working hard over the break to be ready when the new year starts.

Mayor Steve Benjamin Speaks to JROTC class
The JROTC welcomed Mayor Steve Benjamin today to Spring Valley. The JROTC honored him with a Air Battle Uniform (ABC) as an honorary member of SC-064. Mayor Benjamin encouraged the students to dream big and stay focused. Thanks again Mayor Benjamin for visiting our Vikings.
Boys Golf Team Interest Meeting - Thursday, Dec. 16th
There will be a Interest Meeting on Thursday, Dec. 16th at 3:45 in Multi-Purpose Room for boys who are on the golf team and any who are interested in playing in the spring. We are also going to introduce the new coach and begin planning for the spring season.

Winter Days is the largest annual school-wide project at Spring Valley High School. The project consists of many charitable drives that benefit a number of local community agencies. Winter Days is completely student directed. Committee chairs survey agency needs, set collection goals, and begins the challenge of coordinating this large effort in the weeks before Thanksgiving. Collection drives take place in late November and early December. The charities we will be donating to this year include Hannah House, Oliver Gospel Misson, Toys for Tots, Richland County First Steps, Harvest Hope Food Bank, Transitions, Palmetto Health Children's Hospital, and Make-A-Wish South Carolina.
This year the student-led committees have set the following goals for Winter Days 2015:
21,000 Cans and non-perishable food items
1,200 New toys
$7,500 for Make-A-Wish South Carolina
100 Foster Children Sponsorships
600 Bags of toiletries items for the Homeless
850 Children's Books
200 Stuffed Stockings
50 Boxes of cleaning supplies (6 items per box)
Our Winter Days chairman this year is Maggie Tolar, alongside Tanvi Mehta (Junior Co-Chair), Max Miller (Sophomore Co-Chair), and Callie Grace McManus (Freshman Co-Chair).
All donations are due by Monday, December 14 and can be delivered to Spring Valley High School, 120 Sparkleberry Lane Columbia, SC 29229.
We will have an assembly on December 18 at 9:00 am to present to our school our final collection numbers and have local charites accept donations and give a brief thank-you speech.

Nothing But Net Charity Basketball Game
Richland School District One and Richland School District Two employees are going to rumble again on the hardwood at the 2nd annual “Nothing but Net” charity basketball game. The game is Thursday, January 7 at 6 p.m., at Keenan High School, located at 361 Pisgah Church Road.While it is serious competition on the hardwoods, in the end, “Team Richland,” a joint effort of both districts, raised almost $100,000 to benefit the Palmetto Health Foundation Breast Cancer Walk for Life/Race for Life.
The “Nothing but Net” challenge will feature a breast cancer “survivor” recognition presentation during half-time and a free throw shooting contest between school superintendents Dr. Debbie Hamm and Dr. Craig Witherspoon. We hope you will come and cheer on Richland Two! Admission is $5 for everyone age 6 and up. Tickets purchased for the October match up will be honored.

Varsity Boys Basketball
Congratulations to our Boy Basketball team for two great wins this past weekend at the Bojangles Bash. Friday Night We defeated Miami Country Day High School 92-78. We also broke the record for the most points scored in a tournament. Our leading scorers were Deangelo Ward with 25pts, Noah Harper 21pts, Jordan Bruner 13pts, Javondii Myers 11pts, and Tommy Bruner had 8pts.
Saturday Night we defeated Trinity Christian High from NC. 57-41. Our leading scorers were Javodii Myers with 12, Noah Harper 11pts, Deangelo Ward 10pts, K. Wall and J. Bruner both added 6 points.
This brings our record to 3-1. Please come support our team Tuesday as we host Irmo at 7:30 pm. following the girls game at 6:00 pm.
VEX Robotics Season in Full Swing
Spring Valley's VEX Robotics team, 120E: Green & Gold Robotics, competed in three Nothing But Net competitions in November and December and plans to compete in three more in January and February, including the Viking VRC which will be held at Spring Valley on January 30. The team competed with its x-drive robot (Big Shooter) at the CATS Midlands Qualifier on 12/5, finishing 13th and winning the Excellence Award. The team went with its tank/arcade-drive robot (Li'l Shooter) for the Sevier Falcons Qualifier on 11/14, finishing 21st, and for the Botsquad Icicle Open on 12/12, finishing 8th and winning the Design Award.

The Junior Varsity Lady Vikings defeated Northwestern 34-33 in OT. It was as exciting as the last two times we played them all close games. We were lead on offense by Tykiera Wiley with 11 pts, Destiny Coleman and Kenadi Taylor added 5 pts each, Kamryn Beaman 4 pts, Shalyn Jacobs 3 pts, Malyasia Irby, Kymber Lee and Tiara Sumpter 2 pts each. We will be back in action at 5:30 on Monday @ 5:30.

The Spring Valley Lady Vikings defeated Northwestern 61 to 29. The Lady Vikings were led in scoring by Christian Hithe with 16 points and Shantay Taylor with 14 points. Also scoring for the Lady Vikings: Anaja Matthews with 7 points, Kristian Wall and Dominique Hill with 5 points each. Shantay Taylor also grabbed 13 rebounds. Freshman, Taylor Lewis finished with 3 points, 3 blocks and 5 rebounds. Joi Jones grabbed 6 rebounds. Your Lady Vikings play at home on Tuesday, December 15th versus Irmo High School.
SV AP Biology Presentations
The Spring Valley AP Biology students formally presented research they conducted on various types of cancer to fellow students, teachers and even district office personnel.
Their presentations helped simulate a more realistic experience of how research is presented in the scientific community. The experience also helped them hone their communication skills to both scientists and non-scientists. They did an fantastic job and were very professional!

MAN UP (Maximizing and Navigating Unlimited Potential) is a program which aims to develop young men through mentoring and training. Students met their mentors for the first time as Spring Valley's MAN UP mentoring program kicked off the 2015-16 year with it's annual "Meet and Greet". The program continues to grow in its third year of existence.
Congratulations to our "TAG" Students
Every day, teachers, administrators, and counselors at Spring Valley look for students to "TAG". Students get TAGed by offering assistance to others, helping keep our school safe or clean, turning in lost and found items, good citizenship, being helpful to peers, or simply showing a little Viking pride. Each month, to show that we’re “Thinking of the Good Things You Do,” all TAG students will be recognized and will receive a token of appreciation from the school. Congratulations to the TAG students for the month of November!

B-Team fell to Northwestern last night. We started off strong as a team in the first half, but fell short in the second half. The leading scorer was Josh Felder with 8 points. We look to bounce back with our next game at Irmo on Monday.

The JV boys team managed to hold on to the lead in the end dispite a late run by Northwestern. Defensively we were able to cause some turnovers that led to some easy baskets for us to keep us ahead for most of the game. We won the game 42-37. We were led in scoring by sophomore forward Darius Cohens with 12pts. Quincy Hill contributed 9pts. and Freshman Trevor Squirewell chipped in 7pts. Our next game will be a tough road test for us as we travel to Irmo on Monday Dec. 14th. We're looking forward to the challenge.

The Lady Vikings defeated Dreher 45-37. It was a great game. Leading the way with scoring was Christian Hithe with 21 points. Scoring also for the Lady Vikings with 6 points each was Shantay Taylor, Kristian Wall, and Dominique Hill. Freshman, Taylor Lewis scored 4 points and grabbed 9 rebounds. Shantay Taylor also grabbed a game high 12 rebounds. The Lady Vikings' next home game will be next Tuesday against Irmo High School. Come out and support your Spring Valley Vikings!!

Yale Young Global Scholars Program
Yale's Young Global Scholars Program is an intense academic summer program designed to provide talented high school students with interdisciplinary insight, global awareness, and critical skills for becoming leaders inside and outside the classroom. Participants spend two weeks on Yale's campus in New Haven, Connecticut getting an authentic taste of life at Yale with their classmates from around the world.

Culinary Arts 1 students served lunch to assistant principals hosted by Dr. Linda Silvernail at SVHS on Tuesday, December 8, 2015. The menu included chicken and wild rice casserole, green beans, corn, vegetable/fruit salad, and rolls with iced tea. The dessert was green and red velvet cake with cream cheese icing covered with chopped walnuts. A special treat box with four cupcakes decorated for the holiday with a candy cane on top was presented to each guest.
Winter days: Toys donations
Winter Days is in full swing and the toys committee wants to encourage not only students but also parents and members of the community to donate NEW toys. Donations may be dropped off at the front desk in the atrium of Spring Valley. Parent and community member donations will only be accepted up until December 9th, but students are encouraged to keep bringing contributions in until the 16th. There will be winter days members accepting donations at the front of the school in the morning from 8:30am to 9:00am on the 9th. Help us reach our goal for 600 new toys for Toys for Tots!

Spring Valley Gives the Gift of Life
During this time of year when blood donations drop off due to the holidays, students, faculty, staff and community members rolled up their sleeves to give blood. As part of our Winter Days Holiday Drive this year, the Science National Honor Society (SNHS) sponsored a Red Cross Blood Drive here at Spring Valley on Friday, December 4th in the Auxiliary gym. Throughout the day student workers assisted with the blood drive by helping with snacks, sign-in and general support. Thanks to everyone for their blood donations.

The Lady Vikings posted a strong victory on Tuesday night at "the Valley" by defeating Northwestern 67-23. Christian Hithe led scorers with 18 points. Shantay Taylor scored 15 points and grabbed 16 rebounds to post her second Double-Double this year!! Anaja Matthews scored 7 points. Dominique Hill had 4 points, 4 steals, and 2 assists. 11 Lady Vikings scored in this big win!! Our next home game will be on Wednesday, December 9th.

The B-Team recorded their first victory of the season last night at Northwestern. We fell in a hole early in the game again and was down by 10 points at halftime. We came out strong in the second half with a strong defensive stance and aggressive mindset. We battled back scoring 37 second half points while only allowing 14 points. The final score was 49 - 36. The leading scorer was Dallin Brown with 20 points and Josh Felder added 12 points. Great second half performance by the entire team and we look to keep things going with our next game at home, Wednesday December 9th at 6 pm against Northwestern.

Red Cross Blood Drive Tomorrow !
As part of our Winter Days Holiday Drive this year, the Science National Honor Society (SNHS) is sponsoring a Red Cross Blood Drive here at SV on Friday, December 4th. The blood drive will be from 8:30 am to 2:30 pm in the Auxiliary gym. Our goal is to collect 110 pints of blood, which could potentially help 330 individuals in the Midlands!
