Freshman Alyssa Williams was one of nine finalists to participate in the SC State Finals of Poetry Out Loud on Saturday, March 11 at the Columbia Museum of Art. Though she did not advance beyond the third round of finals, she had a great performance in a field of very talented participants. She recited "When You Are Old" by William Butler Yeats and "Insomnia" by Dana Gioia.
Alyssa represented Spring Valley in the state Poetry Out Loud Competition AND State Robotic Competition on the same day! She left the robotics competition to recite her poems and returned to robotics competitions when the POL State finals was over.
Poetry Out Loud is a national recitation contest. National sponsors are the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation while the state sponsors are the South Carolina Arts Commission and the Columbia Museum of Art.
Poetry Out Loud encourages students to learn about great poetry through memorization and recitation. This program helps students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and learn about literary history and contemporary life.
