This 7th annual Saying Grace Community Hunger Project gets more exciting each year. Be part of the movement to feed 100,000 people in our community. Space is LIMITED, so if you or your club is interested, please sign up ASAP. Club sponsors can register their entire group with one email and simply put how many students. ALL packaged food stays in the local community with 15,000 meals designated for the Richland TWO backpack program. Younger siblings, friends, ages 5 and above are welcome.

Boy's Cross Country
9/28
On Saturday the boys cross country team competed in the Low Country Invitational in Charleston. The varsity team finished 6th out of 36 schools. Leading the way was Jacob Ho in 13th (17:15), George Wells in 15th (17:18), Tyler Shuler in 52nd (18:09), Jaden Bowden in 67th (18:28) and Ethan Taylor in 74th (18:34). The JV team won the JV race out of 22 schools by scoring 39 points and Daniel Boone High School was 2nd with 47 points. Jareer Imran was 2nd (18:36), Mark Wild was 5th (18:50), Jack Stacy was 8th (19:02), Henry Pettis was 10th (19:15), and David Conroy was 14th (19:37)

The lady Vikings traveled to Camden country club to take on region foe Lugoff Elgin's lady Demon's.  The lady Vikings were victorious putting up a team score of 209 to Lugoff-Elgin's 241. Other lady Vikings contributing to overall team score were: Maddie Webster, Mary Freeman, and Elaine Craig. 
9/18
The lady Vikings took on the Lady Cardinals from Cardinal Newman at Woodcreek, along with several other teams, Lawrence Manning, Fox Creek, Northside Christian, and several individual players.  Cardinal Newman was too strong from 1 thru 4 and took the match by 32 strokes over Spring Valley's team score of 200, which was 24 strokes better than the rest of the teams for an overall 2nd place.
9/19
The first 18 hole tournament of the season was the Lady Bengal Invitational hosted by Blythewood and played at Columbia Country club.  It was a perfect golfing day.  There were 17 teams that traveled from all over the state to participate.  The lady Vikings finished the tournament in 10th place.  Of 89 players, lady Viking Millie Spivey finished in 25th place, as low medalist for Spring Valley.  Other contributors for overall team score were: Maddie Webster, Elaine Craig, and Millie Sox.  
9/26
The lady Vikings returning to their home course to get revenge on the lady Cardinals from Cardinal Newman on Thursday.  The lady Vikings put up a good fight with some great scoring, but couldn't quite keep up with the lady Cards talent.  Sophomore Maddie Webster finished the day strong as low medalist for the lady Vikings shooting her career and season-low of 41.  The team also shot their lowest 9 hole team score of the season with a 7 stroke improvement.  Other lady Vikings contributing to team score were: Millie Spivey, Millie Sox, and Mary Freeman.  The lady Vikings will be wrapping up their season over the next couple of weeks.  They will be playing in the Smith Memorial tournament, which is also known as the "Pink Out" tournament on Thursday, October 3rd.  Then finishing up their 9 hole match season with a re-scheduled match against White Knoll on October 8th at the Woodlands, which will also be "Senior Night".

Spring Valley is having a "PINK OUT" to support breast cancer awareness. We are encouraging ALL students, faculty, and staff to wear pink to school on Friday, Oct. 25th and to the football game!    

As part of our "Pink Out", we are raising money to donate to the Prisma Health Walk for Life.  All the money raised will go to the Spring Valley Walk for Life team.  

To help raise money we are selling new 2019 "Pink Out" t-shirts.

The SC Teaching Fellows Application window is September 1st through December 1st!

The South Carolina Teaching Fellows Program is entering its 21st year of offering the state’s brightest and best students up to $24,000 over four years to become South Carolina educators. This year we are excited to welcome Clemson University as a Teaching Fellows Institution.

Here's what you need to know about the Teaching Fellows Program.

  • Provides fellowships for up to 200 students each year (actual number determined by funding from the General Assembly)
  • Includes enrichment programs, professional development, and leadership opportunities
  • Supplies up to a $6,000 fellowship annually for four years (as long as the student is in the process of completing a degree leading to teacher certification and meets the criteria to continue in the program)
  • Requires participants to agree to teach in a South Carolina public school one year for each year funding is received and sign a Promissory Note along with a surety

Teaching Fellows must attend one of the eleven Teaching Fellows Institutions. Currently, these include Anderson University, Charleston Southern University, Clemson University, Coastal Carolina University, College of Charleston, Francis Marion University, Lander University, USC Aiken, USC Columbia, USC Upstate, and Winthrop University.

To apply for Teaching Fellows, a student must be:

  • a United States citizen or permanent resident alien legally authorized to be in the United States (Please note - students categorized as Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) are not eligible for Teaching Fellows.)
  • a legal resident of South Carolina (Please note - Residency will be verified by the Teaching Fellows Institution after a student has been offered an award.)
  • a high school senior or junior graduating early

Here's what you need to know about the Teaching Fellows application:

  • The application is hosted by Kaleidoscope.
  • The Kaleidoscope system saves the student’s application as they move through the process. This allows the student to complete the application over an extended period of time, as necessary. Students must use the same email address to create the application and to log back into the application.
  • Students may edit their application, even after submission, as long as the edits occur before 11:59 PM on December 1, 2019. 
  • During the application process, students will be asked to enter their school counselor’s name and email address. Once entered, the Kaleidoscope system will email the counselor and provide instructions on how to create an account and how to upload a transcript and ACT/SAT scores. Transcripts will be automatically attached to the student’s application.
  • During the application process, students will be asked to enter the names and email addresses for two references. Once entered, the Kaleidoscope system will email each reference and provide instructions on how to create an account and how to complete the reference survey. Reference surveys will be automatically attached to the student’s application.
  • Applicants will have access to their personalized Kaleidoscope dashboard where they MUST monitor the submission of their transcripts and reference surveys. 
  • Transcripts and reference surveys must be submitted through Kaleidoscope. Copies of transcripts and/or reference surveys submitted via any other mode will not be accepted.
  • If a student’s counselor does not have access to his/her ACT and/or SAT test scores, the student is responsible for having an official score report sent directly to CERRACERRA's SAT code is 3680 and CERRA's ACT code is 3873. The SAT and/or ACT report must arrive at CERRA by 11:59 PM on December 1, 2019.
  • Students must complete the application online via the Kaleidoscope system.
  • In order for applications to be considered complete, the student must answer all mandatory questions on the online application and a high school transcript and two references must be submitted through the Kaleidoscope system before 11:59 PM on December 1, 2019. 

The online application opened on September 1, 2019. The deadline for submission will be December 1, 2019, with notification to Fellowship recipients in early spring 2020. Please see Mrs. Dilley in 329D for assistance if needed!

Today kicks of "Start with Hello" week which is a program initiated by the Sandy Hook Promise and supported by our Transform SV initiative.  

Tuesday: 
Help combat social isolation!  If you see someone sitting alone, stop and say "hello!"

Wednesday: 
No one eats alone!  If you see someone eating alone at lunch, say "hello" and join them for lunch!

Thursday: 
Random Acts of Kindness Day!  Go beyond just saying "hello!"  Send an encouraging email to someone you know needs it!

Friday:
Making Good Choices Recognitions!  Did you get "caught" making good choices?  We will draw names and inform the 4th period teacher of the students whose names are drawn. 
After that, stop by the Transform SV table at the football game!  Tell us how you made "lemonade when life gave you lemons" and we'll give you a FREE lemonade!

RETURN TEXTBOOKS

Students who still have textbooks from last year need to return them to avoid being charged the full replacement cost. Books can be turned in to the fee office Monday - Friday from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. Thank you for your cooperation.
