UPDATE: Parents of all 3rd Year Students!

Frequently Asked Questions...

Q:  Can I just email my selection?
A:  No, an email will not work.  Either complete the form, sign it, and turn it in at the Main Office OR your parents can make the selection through their Parent Portal account.

Q:  Can I choose both tests for my student?
A:  No, you can only select one...EITHER the ACT or the SAT, but not both.

Q:  If I don't want to test, I don't have to do anything, right?
A:  Wrong... all 3rd year students MUST turn in a form or a parent must make the selection in Parent Portal.  Students who do not turn in a form or do not have a selection through Parent Portal will take the ACT test.

Q:  When is this due?
A:  Selections must be made by December 8th.

Parents of all 3rd Year Students:

Tomorrow, in 3rd period, your student will receive a letter about College Readiness Assessments.  This year, your 3rd year student can choose to take EITHER the ACT, the SAT, or not to test.  On the back of the letter, you will need to indicate the selection for your student, sign it, and return it to the main office at Spring Valley NO LATER THAN December 8th!  There will be a collection box in the main office for the returned letters.

Alternately, you can choose to log-in to your Parent Portal account to indicate your preference.  If you choose to make your selection in Parent Portal, do not return the letter.  If you make a selection in Parent Portal, and also return a letter, the selection in Parent Portal will be used for test selection purposes.

If no selection is made (and returned) by December 8th, your student will be assigned to take the ACT.

Things to consider:

Test Date:

AP Capstone Program

Spring Valley High School is proud to announce that College Board has approved our application to implement their new AP Capstone Program for the 2018-2019 School Year.  Currently, we offer over 20 AP courses to our students and with the addition of this program, we will now have a diploma program to align with those offerings. The AP Capstone is built on two AP courses- AP Seminar and AP Research- and is designed to complement and enhance the in-depth, discipline-specific study experienced in other AP courses. This is a two-year program that will earn students completing both parts 2 AP credits.  College Board requires Seminar as a prerequisite to Research; consequently, Seminar is available to sophomores and juniors for the 2018-19.  We will then add Research in 2019-2020 and offer both courses as we move forward.

In AP Seminar, students investigate real-world issues from multiple perspectives, gathering and analyzing information from various sources in order to develop credible and valid evidence-based arguments. In AP Research, students cultivate the skills and discipline necessary to conduct independent research and inquiry in order to produce and defend their scholarly work.

The AP Capstone program aims to empower students by:

  • engaging them with rigorous college-level curricula focused on the skills necessary for successful college completion;
  • extending their abilities to synthesize information from multiple perspectives and apply skills in new situations and cross-curricular contexts;
  • enabling them to collect and analyze information with accuracy and precision;
  • cultivating their abilities to craft, communicate, and defend evidence-based arguments; and
  • providing opportunities for them to practice disciplined and scholarly research skills while exploring relevant topics that appeal to their interests and curiosity.

First Semester Exam Schedule

Guidelines

Exams are given during the final week of each semester.  All students are expected to take exams as scheduled -- exams cannot be taken early (in advance of the student’s assigned class).

Make-up exams may be given only under special circumstances which cause hardships such as surgery or death in the family (vacation plans, trips, etc. will not be considered as hardship situations.).  Make-up exams must be taken within three weeks of the original exam date. Written permission must be obtained from Dr. Silvernail to schedule a makeup exam. Approval to reschedule the exam does not excuse the absence. Students may not sign out of school during an exam period.

All students will be required to participate in the exam schedule. Seniors may exempt exams if they have 90% or above in a class (except End of Course exams). Seniors should receive notification of exemption status by the Friday before senior exams.

Make A Donation to Make Wish Foundation for Winter Days

wdLetterhead.fw.png

Winter days will again be assisting Make A Wish SC by helping to raise $7,500 for a child that is battling a life-threatening medical condition. No matter how big or small, every contribution helps, and is greatly appreciated.

Through the Make A Wish Foundation, a wish experience can be a game-changer for a child with a life-threatening medical condition.  Wishes are more than just a nice thing. And they are far more than gifts, or singular events in time. Wishes impact everyone involved - wish kids, volunteers, donors, sponsors, medical professionals, and communities. The impact varies.  For wish kids, just the act of making their wish come true can give them the courage to comply with their medical treatments. Parents might finally feel like they can be optimistic. And still, others might realize all they have to offer the world through volunteer work or philanthropy.

Tens of thousands of volunteers, donors, and supporters advance the Make-A-Wish ®vision to grant the wish of every child diagnosed with a life-threatening medical condition. In the United States and its territories, on average, a wish is granted every 37 minutes. Whatever the odds, whatever the obstacles ... wishes find a way to make the world better.

On behalf of the Winter Days service project, as well as the children involved in Make-A-Wish, we are asking you to please consider these children in need, and make a monetary donation to the Make-A-Wish Foundation through Winter Days. We would be grateful for any monetary donation you would be willing to provide. You may donate by going to the link below and clicking the blue button that says “DONATE to this fundraiser.”
