First Semester Exam Schedule

Guidelines

Exams are given during the final week of each semester.  All students are expected to take exams as scheduled -- exams cannot be taken early (in advance of the student’s assigned class).

Make-up exams may be given only under special circumstances which cause hardships such as surgery or death in the family (vacation plans, trips, etc. will not be considered as hardship situations.).  Make-up exams must be taken within three weeks of the original exam date. Written permission must be obtained from Dr. Silvernail to schedule a makeup exam. Approval to reschedule the exam does not excuse the absence. Students may not sign out of school during an exam period.

All students will be required to participate in the exam schedule. Seniors may exempt exams if they have 90% or above in a class (except End of Course exams). Seniors should receive notification of exemption status by the Friday before senior exams.

What are Career Clusters and why should I know about them?

Career clusters are a way of grouping careers with common features and skills. Careers grouped into the same cluster typically require similar education and training. Exploring clusters can be a useful way to find a good career match, especially if you have general areas of interest but are not sure what specific careers match those interests. Career clusters can also help you better understand how your coursework in school can prepare you for certain types of careers.
For more information about Career Clusters, please contact a Spring Valley Career Development Facilitator:  Mrs. Ashworth (bashworth@richland2.org), Mrs. Wright (vawright@richland2.org) and Mrs. Dickerson (hdickerson@richland2.org).

Parents - Why not explore and talk about careers with your student(s) over the holidays?

PSAT Scores

In a few days, students 13 years old and over who provided their email address on their PSAT/NMSQT answer sheet will receive an email reminder from College Board explaining where and how to view their scores. Students 13 and over who took the PSAT 8/9 can create an online account to view their scores. Students can set up a free College Board account at any time. Scores for our area are scheduled to be available to students on December 13, 2017.
If a student does not see their scores when they log in, it may be that the student has created two or more College Board accounts.  Accounts are created whenever an e-mail address is entered on the answer sheet by the student.  If this is the case, you must call College Board Customer Service and tell them you need to merge your student's College Board accounts.  This is not something that can be done through Spring Valley.  You must do this through College Board.  Their telephone number is 866-433-7728.

Spring Valley will receive paper score reports in mid/late December.  Score reports will be matched with the student's test booklet from test day and distributed during advisory on January 22, 2018.

Congratulations Singers!

The SVHS Choirs performed a holiday program at the 10:30 AM Advent service at St. Martin's In The Fields Episcopal Church yesterday in Forest Acres. Hats off to these wonderful singers for their dedication and extra-time spent sharing their talents in the greater Columbia metro area.

Don't Miss the Deadline!

Tomorrow (Dec. 8th) is the deadline for all 3rd year students to make their test selection for either the ACT on Feb. 27th or the SAT on Mar. 21st.  There is also the option to take neither test, but it must be submitted.  Students who do not submit a selection will take the ACT on Feb. 27th.

Frequently Asked Questions...

Q:  Can I just email my selection?
A:  No, an email will not work.  Either complete the form, sign it, and turn it in at the Main Office OR your parents can make the selection through their Parent Portal account.

Q:  Can I choose both tests for my student?
A:  No, you can only select one...EITHER the ACT or the SAT, but not both.

Q:  If I don't want to test, I don't have to do anything, right?
A:  Wrong... all 3rd year students MUST turn in a form or a parent must make the selection in Parent Portal.  Students who do not turn in a form or do not have a selection through Parent Portal will take the ACT test.

Q:  When is this due?
A:  Selections must be made by December 8th.

Parents of all 3rd Year Students:

Your student should have received a letter about College Readiness Assessments.  This year, your 3rd year student can choose to take EITHER the ACT, the SAT, or not to test.  On the back of the letter, you will need to indicate the selection for your student, sign it, and return it to the main office at Spring Valley NO LATER THAN December 8th!  There is a collection box in the main office for the returned letters.  You can click the link above to print off a copy of the letter if your student does not have one.

Alternately, you can choose to log-in to your Parent Portal account to indicate your preference.  If you choose to make your selection in Parent Portal, do not return the letter.  If you make a selection in Parent Portal, and also return a letter, the selection in Parent Portal will be used for test selection purposes.

If no selection is made (and returned) by December 8th, your student will be assigned to take the ACT.

The Vikings B-Team started off the season with a hard-earned WIN yesterday vs the Ridgeview Blazers. The Team was led in scoring by Cobi Cornelius and Jordan Smith with 7 points apiece. Devin Drayton and his LOCKDOWN defense turned into 4 steals and 5 points to help in the victory. Akram Hulwe (5 points), Robert Reed (3 points), Daniel Smith (3 points) and Terrance Williamson (3 points) were also great scoring contributors.

The start of the season didn't go as planned as we were defeated by a good Ridge View team 41-27.  I was proud of our effort and how hard we played and competed.  This game is one that we will build off of and get better and more prepared for our next contest.  Our scorers of the game were Cortland Shell 8pts., Hy-Kein Nhan 7pts., Christian Grant 4pts., Sayvon Jackson 3pts. and Hassan Washington 3pts.
