On November 1, 2018, Austin Vennetti, Culinary Arts Classroom Presenter for Johnson and Wales University, talked with Theresa Formyduval’s Culinary Arts students. He discussed educational opportunities at Johnson and Wales University as well as gave the students tips on applications, scholarships, student organizations, and college life as they prepare for their careers. He demonstrated his sanitation skills as he added the bacon wearing gloves and washing his hands afterwards to prevent cross-contamination and culinary knife skills cutting an onion and preparing garlic.
His cooking skills were demonstrated as he made a recipe for Pasta Alla Carbonara with rotini pasta, eggs, red pepper flakes, parmesan cheese, bacon, onion, garlic, and green peas which each student sampled.
There is no application fee to apply to Johnson and Wales University which is a private and non-profit school.  Students can apply in their Junior or Senior year of high school. Approximately 99% of the students receive scholarships.  The website is

American Free Enterprise Day

On Thursday, November 15, the Spring Valley Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) Chapter celebrated American Free Enterprise Day. American Free Enterprise Day honors the American Enterprise System and informs others about its importance. This day was created in 1980 by President Jimmy Carter to honor this founding principle of the United States economy, that gives Americans the right to make their own economic choices with minimal government interference. On this day, FBLA members dressed up in business attire and passed out mints to fellow students. Our FBLA advisers, Mrs. Jones, and Mrs. Lawton gave candy bags to Spring Valley faculty that promoted the FBLA business Viking Awards. Viking Awards creates high-quality plaques and awards. The proceeds from Viking Awards is used to fund the travels, competition fees, and activities for FBLA members. The Spring Valley FBLA Chapter enjoyed celebrating this day, and we look forward to honoring this day next year.

FBLA Celebrates World Prematurity Day

On Friday, November 16, the Spring Valley Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) Chapter wore purple in honor of World Prematurity that was held on November 17th. Premature birth is the largest contributor to infant deaths globally. Spring Valley FBLA rose awareness for this cause by decorating the school in purple, and by getting administration and staff to wear purple as well. We are grateful for everyone that supported this cause with us.

Career Tools for Parents and Students

Career Education - A student's career development relies on a quality career guidance program. Knowitall.org sponsored by ETV is a great resource for parents to assist with career awareness, career exploration, and career preparation of students with the objective of facilitating a successful transition into post-secondary opportunities and the 21st-century global workplace.
Career clusters are a way of grouping careers with common features and skills. Careers grouped into the same cluster typically require similar education and training. Exploring clusters can be a useful way to find a good career match, especially if you have general areas of interest but are not sure what specific careers match those interests. Career clusters can also help you better understand how your coursework in school can prepare you for certain types of careers.

Information on each Career Cluster is available by visiting the Career Cluster Guides below from SC Department of Education - Career And Technology Education:
For more information about Career Clusters, please go to your Naviance account at naviance.com and click on the following: sign-in, students/family sign-in, 29229, Spring Valley High School, enter your school email address for username and your 6 digit birthday for your password. Please contact a Career Development Facilitator prior to June 8, 2018, if you have any questions:  Mrs. Ashworth (bashworth@richland2.org) or Mrs. Wright (vawright@richland2.org)

Parents - Why not explore and talk about careers with your student(s) over the summer?
