B-Team Football
The Spring Valley B-Team defeated Westwood in a thrilling 28-20 victory last night. The young Vikings got things rolling in the first half as the special teams pulled off two onside kicks in the first quarter. Those big plays ignited our triple option offense, which led to big plays in the passing game. Scoring on touchdown passes were Marquel Brown, a diving, flipping, 360 score at the goal line, Calvin Johnson, and Oru-Ntul (OT) Nkiri, who also ran for another touchdown. Also running the ball well and bulldozing defenders was Danny Evans who also played well on defense. Maddux Harrell threw 3 TD passes, as well as a 2 point conversion. Defensively the Vikings were led by Dallas Carraway up front and Harrison Dowland in the secondary. The B-Team improves to 2-3 overall including a game vs a JV team and take the field at Irmo next Thursday.

AP Environmental Science Field Study to Sesquicentennial State Park

On September 27th, AP Environmental Science students conducted their annual basic water quality analysis of the lake at Sesquicentennial State Park.  As part of an ecology unit students planned and implemented a basic study of the abiotic and biotic factors used to classify lakes. This included nutrients (phosphorus, ammonium, and nitrates), dissolved oxygen, temperature, depth, fecal contamination, and turbidity. A team of students are also producing a video documentary of the survey. A portion of this video report will be broadcast to the school via the school news show.  Data collected will also be shared with the State Park.

Spring Valley's VEX Robotics Teams Set Up a Practice Field

Ms. Tammy Vaught, our new mentor/coach for Spring Valley's VEX Robotics Teams 120E and 120V, brought her field to the school for the teams to use as a practice field.  Ms. Vaught was the mentor/coach for Sumter High School's VEX Robotics Teams last year and for Whale Branch Early College High School's teams before that.  She has joined the Spring Valley faculty in the CATE Department, teaching Exploring Computer Science and Animation.

CATE Engineering teacher Dr. Michael Rodgers, who served as the mentor/coach for 120E the past two years, will assist Ms. Vaught with the teams this year.  He helped them set up the practice field on Monday 9/26 in the engineering room.  The teams are working hard on their designs for this year's new competition, VEX Starstruck.  In each match, the red and blue teams will send stars and cubes back and forth over the fence.  There's a lot more to it, but, basically, whichever side has the fewest game pieces on their side at the end of the match wins.

Spring Valley's first competition of the year will be the Cougar Challenge at Lady's Island Middle School in Beaufort on 10/29.  Spring Valley also plans to compete in the CATS Midlands Qualifier at the Center for Advanced Technical Studies in Chapin on 12/3.  And Spring Valley will be hosting two VEX Robotics competitions, the Viking Hammer Qualifier on 11/12 and the Viking Gauntlet Challenge on 2/4.  This will be a very exciting year for robotics at Spring Valley.
