Spring Valley Summer Reading

The Spring Valley English Department wants to encourage you to take the time out this summer to read. As such, we have created a list of offerings for enjoyable reading. Feel free to choose from any novel on any list. The suggestions are simply made based upon average readability levels for the grade. Some of these texts will also assist you in preparing for either AP Language or AP Literature testing and coursework. Many of the classic novels can be found for free on the Internet. In addition, the local Richland County Library has them in-stock. We also encourage you to read a variety of other fiction and nonfiction sources ranging from newspaper and magazine articles to plays and poetry. Happy reading!

Summer Packet for Ms.Fowler's AP Calculus AB Course

For students enrolled in Ms. Thomas' AP Calculus AB course, an optional (but highly recommended) summer packet assignment is now available. The solutions to the packet will be made available one week prior to the start of the school year 2020-2021. Ms. Thomas will hold three live online sessions throughout the summer to go over the three phases of the summer packet and to answer any questions you may have about the content of the summer packet. The recordings of these online sessions will be made available through Google Classroom. You will also be given an opportunity to submit your work prior to each online session in order to receive feedback on your work:

If you would like to receive updated information about the summer packet, fill out this form to be added to the summer Google Classroom.

What?
We know that colleges are facing an uncertain Fall, but one thing we know for sure - they will be reading applications and preparing for their Fall 2021 Freshman class.

If some Fall 2020 students defer their admission until 2021, it could make college admissions for Fall 2021 even more competitive than ever before.

The Common Application is actually changing as a result of Covid 19

What has this pandemic taught us about the value of a post-secondary education?

Spring Valley High School is pleased to announce that Vamsi Gorrepati was named a 2020 U.S. Presidential Scholar. Only three were selected from our state. This is such a huge honor and recognition for Vamsi, his family, our school, and our entire school district. Since 2003, Spring Valley High School has had six students to be recognized as Presidential Scholars.

Vamsi Gorrepati is a senior at Spring Valley High School in the Discovery magnet program. As an Eagle Scout, he has even received the National Eagle Scout Service Project of the Year from the Indian Waters Council for building a playground for his temple. Vamsi will be attending Yale University, where he plans to major in Computer Science with a pre-med focus.

The Scholars have all demonstrated leadership, scholarship, contribution to school and community, and outstanding accomplishments in the arts, sciences, humanities, and other fields of interest.  Here is more info about the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program: https://www2.ed.gov/programs/psp/index.html

Spring Valley National Merit® $2500 Scholarship Winner Alyssa Williams

Congratulations to Spring Valley senior, Alyssa Williams. Today, the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) announced this year’s National Merit $2500 Scholarship winners. The 2,500 Merit Scholar designees were chosen from a talent pool of more than 15,000 outstanding Finalists in the 2020 National Merit Scholarship Program.

National Merit $2500 Scholarship winners are the Finalists in each state judged to have the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills, and potential for success in rigorous college studies. The number of winners named in each state is proportional to the state’s percentage of the nation’s graduating high school seniors.

These Scholars were selected by a committee of college admissions officers and high school counselors, who appraised a substantial amount of information submitted by both the Finalists and their high schools: the academic record, including difficulty level of subjects studied and grades earned; scores from the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®); contributions and leadership in school and community activities; an essay written by the Finalist, and a recommendation written by a high school official.

NMSC finances most of these single-payment National Merit $2500 Scholarships. Corporations and company foundations that sponsor awards through NMSC also help underwrite these scholarships with grants they provide in lieu of paying administrative fees. Scholars may use their awards at any regionally accredited U.S. college or university. 2020 National Merit Scholarship Competition This year’s National Merit Scholarship Program began in October 2018 when over 1.5 a million juniors in approximately 21,000 high schools took the PSAT/NMSQT, which served as an initial screen of program entrants. Last fall, the highest-scoring participants in each state, representing less than one percent of the nation’s high school seniors, were named Semifinalists on a state-representational basis. Only these 16,000 Semifinalists had an opportunity to continue in the competition. From the Semifinalist group, some 15,000 students met the very high academic standards and other requirements to advance to the Finalist level of the competition. By the conclusion of the 2020 program, about 7,600 Finalists will have earned the “Merit Scholar” title and received a total of over $30 million in college scholarships. NMSC, a not-for-profit corporation that operates without government assistance, was founded in 1955 specifically to conduct the National Merit Scholarship Program. The majority of scholarships offered each year are underwritten by approximately 400 independent corporate and college sponsors that share NMSC’s goals of honoring scholastically talented youth and encouraging academic excellence at all levels of education.
