Saturday Tutoring for 10th Graders


Gear Up Spring Valley will hold Saturday Tutoring for 10th grade students beginning on Saturday, February 3, 2018 in room C148 with Mr. Jackson. The program times are 10 a.m.-12 p.m. Students can receive reduced detention hours and assistance with all math levels. If your child is interested in attending any of the sessions register at: Saturday Tutoring If you have any questions please contact Ms. Blassingame or Mr. Jackson

Interact Club New Member Induction Tomorrow


1st Annual Viking Race


On February 17th at 10:00am our school will host the Viking Race. Teams of 5 will compete in this ultimate test of endurance, strength, and determination for a grand prize of $500! Each team will complete many obstacles, including a sled push, carrying a casualty dummy on a stretcher, and pulling a military Humvee. Registration is open to anyone! Registering only costs $10 per person, and forms can be found in the main office. There will be an interest meeting on January 31st during Lunch. See you there!"

New Alive at 25 Session! Rare Opportunity!

This is a rare opportunity to take your Alive at 25 class during the school day on Tuesday, February 27th.  If you are a Junior who will be taking the ACT on February 27th, you cannot sign up for this Alive at 25 class since it will take place during testing.


This Alive at 25 session will take place on:

Tuesday, February 27th from 8:45 am-1:15 pm in room C145.  


If you are registered for Alive at 25 on this date, you will report directly to that classroom at 8:40 am.


In order to park at SVHS, a student must take the Alive @ 25 class sponsored by the SC Chapter of the National Safety Council. To sign up for the class you must sign-up online at the scalive@25 website. The cost of the class is $35 (there is an additional $3.00 charge for debit or credit transactions). Each class lasts 4 1/2 hours. These class may fill up quickly, so please sign up ASAP.


Alyssa Williams Recognized as Technology Leader

Alyssa Williams 
Alyssa Williams has been selected as an Aspirations in Computing – South Carolina award recipient. She attends Spring Valley High School in Columbia, SC. The award is part of a national effort to encourage more young women to choose careers in technology and is organized in South Carolina by the National Center for Women & Information Technology (NCWIT) and IT-oLogy.


“With technology jobs projected to grow faster than all other job sectors in the next decade, it’s imperative that we nurture the computing aspirations of women, who will make up half the professional workforce,” said Lucy Sanders, CEO and Co-founder of NCWIT.  “This award allows us recognize and encourage talent that might otherwise be overlooked.”

The NCWIT Award for Aspirations in Computing was created to encourage the computing aspirations of young women, introduce them to leadership opportunities in the field, and generate visibility for women’s participation in technology fields. Winners are acknowledged for their outstanding aptitude and interest in technology and computing, leadership ability, academic history, and plans for post-secondary education.

Thirteen young women will be honored at a reception hosted by IT-oLogy and Winthrop University in February. The group includes 11 winners, two honorable mentions, and one honorable mention national recipient.

Arabian Nights Prom 2018

Prom 2018

Prom tickets will go on sale starting this week. Tickets will be sold on Wednesdays at lunch in the Atrium lobby. All school fees must be paid prior to buying a prom ticket. Ticket prices will increase bi-weekly, so get your tickets early!

Seniors are eligible for 1 free ticket and must sign up for their free ticket during ticket sales. All fees MUST be paid to get your free ticket. If your date is an underclassman then you must purchase a date ticket. Juniors who are graduating early are not eligible for a free ticket.

If your date is not a Spring Valley student, you must complete a "Prom Guest Form" and return it to Mrs. Dickerson in the Counseling Office no later than Friday, April 20t

American Mathematics Competition


The American Mathematics Competition (AMC 10/12) exam will be offered at Spring Valley H.S. on Wednesday, February 7th  and Thursday, February 15th.  Please see Mrs. Stiffler in D127 to register.   Cost is $2.00.

2018 Junior Science & Humanities Symposium Results

Junior Science & Humanities Symposium

Ten Spring Valley Discovery students submitted research papers to the 2018 Department of Defense-sponsored Junior Science and Humanities Symposium (JSHS), which took place on January 26, 2018, at the University of South Carolina. Based on their written research papers, the following students were chosen as Semifinalists.  Semifinalists were competing for the opportunity to attend and compete for scholarships at National JSHS in Hunt Valley, Maryland (all expenses paid).

In the finalist round Lily Shytle earned first place ($2,000 scholarship), and Gillian Patton earned second place ($1,500 scholarship). Both will compete in oral presentation sessions at the National JSHS conference. Kristina Trifonova won fifth place overall and will compete in the National JSHS poster session. Finally, Jasmine Hughley (10) also earned first place in her session. Congratulations to these students and their research teachers--Dr. Joanne Bedlek-Anslow, Mr. Dale Soblo, and Mrs. Michelle Spigner.

Spring Valley's FBLA Excels at District II Conference



The Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) members competed during the FBLA District II Conference on Saturday, January 27th at Westwood High School.  Students competed in 15 areas and ranked well enough in all 15 areas to move on to the FBLA State Leadership Conference to be held in Charleston, SC during March 16-17th. When you see these students around campus, make sure to congratulate them on a job well done!

Mrs. Shelia Jones nominated for SCBEA Teacher of the Year

Spring Valley High School Business Education  teacher, Mrs. Shelia Jones, has been nominated for the South Carolina Business Education Association (SCBEA) Secondary Teacher of the Year Award. Each year the association grants one of its seven awards to a secondary business education teacher who has made major accomplishments in business education. 

The SCBEA is responsible for assisting teachers in the development of business education programs that are relevant and current.  SCBEA also provides current information on new trends, speakers and effective leadership in business education.. The program is patterned after the National Business Education Association (NBEA) Awards program with the intent to inspire, promote, honor, and reward outstanding achievement in and contributions to the profession.  

Spring Valley High School and Richland School District 2 are proud to support Mrs. Jones in her nomination for this distinguished honor.  The winner will be announced during the 2018 SCBEA Conference held in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina during January 31 - February 3, 2018.

Million Women Mentors


Million Women Mentors South Carolina is a movement connecting STEM stakeholders with girls and young women, through mentoring and collaboratin with business, education, industry, military and non-profit organizations, to increase interest and confidence of young women to pursue and succeed in STEM edcution and careers.
