2018 Graduation Information

As we prepare for graduation on June 4th, here is some information that will be useful:

GRADUATION BULLETIN

NEW SECURITY PROCEDURES:
There has been an addition to the security process for all High School Graduation.
Along with the Bag Checks at all entrances into the facility, there will now be metal detectors at all entrances. This process is known as wanding.

Bag check and wanding will be at all patron entrances to the facility.

Wanding and bag checks will be in place at the back door for students as well. Please make sure you understand that being on time is going to be extremely important. Make sure you do not carry items in access and only carry what you need (keys, cell phones, wallets etc.) To help the process move quickly and smoothly, as you approach the back door you will need to have your gown unzipped and have everything out of your pockets and in your hand.

Second Semester Exam Schedule

Guidelines

Exams are given during the final week of each semester.  All students are expected to take exams as scheduled -- exams cannot be taken early (in advance of the student’s assigned class).

Make-up exams may be given only under special circumstances which cause hardships such as surgery or death in the family (vacation plans, trips, etc. will not be considered as hardship situations.).  Make-up exams must be taken within three weeks of the original exam date. Written permission must be obtained from Dr. Silvernail to schedule a makeup exam. Approval to reschedule the exam does not excuse the absence. Students may not sign out of school during an exam period.

All students will be required to participate in the exam schedule. Seniors may exempt exams if they have 90% or above in a class (except End of Course exams). Seniors should receive notification of exemption status by the Friday before senior exams.

Exchange Student Program

Congratulations to Jackson McFadden! Jackson will be participating in the Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange program next year in Germany as a junior. Jackson is 1of 250 from the US that was selected for the program!

What are Career Clusters and why should I know about them?

Career clusters are a way of grouping careers with common features and skills. Careers grouped into the same cluster typically require similar education and training. Exploring clusters can be a useful way to find a good career match, especially if you have general areas of interest but are not sure what specific careers match those interests. Career clusters can also help you better understand how your coursework in school can prepare you for certain types of careers.

For more information about Career Clusters, please go to your Naviance account at naviance.com and click on the following: sign-in, students/family sign-in, 29229, Spring Valley High School, enter your school email address for username and your 6 digit birthday for your password. Please contact a Career Development Facilitator prior to June 8, 2018, if you have any questions:  Mrs. Ashworth (bashworth@richland2.org) or Mrs. Wright (vawright@richland2.org)

Parents - Why not explore and talk about careers with your student(s) over the summer?

Discovery Students Soar at the International Science and Engineering Fair

Based on their outstanding research projects presented at the USC Region II Science Fair, Discovery students Gillian Patton (11) and Elizabeth “Lily” Shytle (10) were chosen to participate in the 2018 International Science & Engineering Fair (ISEF) in Pittsburgh, PA, May 13th-18th.  Gillian presented her research project in the category of Biochemistry to several different judges on Wednesday and then to over 300 Pennsylvania schoolchildren on Thursday as part of the Public Outreach Day. There were more than 1800 finalist projects and 81 countries/ territories represented.

Of these finalists, Gillian won 3rd place in the world ($1000) in her category. Lily participated in Observer Day activities at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History followed by a Student Project Share where students shared information about their own projects and research with their peers in a small group setting. They also had the opportunity to view all of the finalists’ projects.  The students truly enjoyed experiencing Pittsburgh as well as the ISEF-sponsored fun-filled evening events.  Many thanks to the University of South Carolina and Blue Cross Blue Shield for sponsoring both the Region 2 Science and Engineering Fair and the trip to ISEF.

SVHS Chromebook Summer Take-Home Information

Attention Spring Valley Parents and Guardians:

Spring Valley High School students will participate in a summer take home program for Chromebooks this year. This means that non-graduating students will be keeping their school-issued Chromebooks over the summer.

Here is some basic information about our summer take-home program:

·        Graduating Seniors are not eligible to participate in the summer take-home program.
·        Students transferring schools or withdrawing will need to turn in their devices on or before Wednesday, June 6th, the last day of exams.
·        Underclassmen student devices will be evaluated before the end of the school year.  If the computer needs any major repairs these repairs will need to be completed before May 14th so the Chromebook is ready to take home at the end of the school year.
·        The optional Computing Device Management Plan (CDMP) covers one incident of accidental damage from Aug 22, 2017, to August 31, 2018.
·        A second or subsequent accidental damage, incident, loss, or theft is not covered by the premium and the student will be responsible for the full cost of repair or replacement.
·        If the premium was not paid or has already been used this school year students can still take home Chromebooks with the understanding that they are responsible for any damage.
·        If you do not wish for your child to participate in the summer take home program, you will need to contact Andrea Clutts in writing through email at: aclutts@richland2.org. Please include your child’s full name, grade, and ID number in the email.

Thank you!
