MiKayla Turner, a ninth grade student at Spring Valley, has been selected to participate in the 2017 Serious Young Writers Workshop Series at Columbia College. Now in its fourth year, the program designed for high school girls, has grown to include six sessions spanning three genres: short fiction, poetry, and children’s literature. MiKayla will participate in The Power of Me: Memoir Writing during the week of June 26-30, 2017. She had to submit a writing sample and teacher recommendation to be considered.
Columbia College offers these workshops to take talented young writers to the next level. Through personalized writing instruction, collaborative revision, and time to write each day, students will polish their creative work and learn tricks of the writer’s trade. In addition to working closely with seasoned writers, they will meet other published writers during each workshop and hear stories of their writers’ journeys. At the conclusion of the workshop, participants will receive a professionally printed paperback book containing their work.
Participation in the program was made possible by a scholarship provided through the Gear Up program.
