Attention all future teachers!
The Teaching Fellow Program is entering its 20th year of offering the state’s brightest and best students up to $24,000 over four years to become South Carolina educators.
Administered by CERRA-South Carolina, the Program provides fellowships for up to 200 students each year (actual number determined by funding from the General Assembly). These students participate in enrichment programs at a Teaching Fellows Institution, engage in professional development and leadership opportunities, partner with communities and businesses, and receive up to a $6,000 fellowship annually for four years as long as they are in the process of completing a degree leading to teacher certification and meet the criteria to continue in the program. A Fellow must agree to teach in a South Carolina public school one year for each year he/she receives funding.
Any student who is a legal resident of South Carolina (DACA students are not eligible for Teaching Fellows) and a current high school senior, or junior graduating early, who will be attending college as a freshman in the fall of 2019 may apply. Fellowships are based on academic achievement, references, community and school involvement, an interview and a writing assessment. Students must attend one of the ten Teaching Fellows Institutions. Currently, these include Anderson University, Charleston Southern University, Coastal Carolina University, College of Charleston, Francis Marion University, Lander University, USC Aiken, USC Columbia, USC Upstate, and Winthrop University.
The online application will open September 1, 2018. The deadline for submission will be December 1, 2018, with notification to Fellowship recipients in early spring 2019. For any questions or if you would like help applying, please visit the CIC or see Mrs. Dilley in 329D.

Summer Research Experience for Teachers (RET)
Ms. Lindsey Rega pursued a unique research opportunity this summer through the South Carolina RET, a program managed from Furman University and funded by an $18 million award from the National Institutes of Health and a $20 million National Science Foundation EPSCoR grant. The RET program enables teachers to engage in a 6-week immersion research experience at an institution in their local area. These experiences (the first for many SC teachers) expose teachers to modern research and allow them to link their research activities to classroom activities designed to increase their students’ knowledge and awareness of science. Working with Dr. Michael Wyatt, a University of South Carolina (USC) professor in the College of Pharmacy, Ms. Rega learned about a recent revolution in biomedical research called CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing. The technique can be used to “knock out” genes in order to study the function of the proteins encoded by those genes. She used bacteria to generate the tools to knockout human DNA repair genes in prostate and ovarian cancer cells. The long-term goal of this research is to better predict which patients will respond to chemotherapy by better understanding how tumor cells repair DNA damage caused by chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Ms. Rega presented her research at the Network RET Poster Session on August 10th at USC. Ms. Rega’s experience came at the perfect time; she will be using much of what she learned as she teaches sophomore Discovery students Research 1 this year along with Mr. Dale Soblo. Congratulations to Ms. Rega for completing this rigorous research experience!
