National School Counseling Week 2020, "School Counselors: Helping Build Better Humans," will be celebrated from Feb. 3-7, 2020, to focus public attention on the unique contribution of school counselors within U.S. school systems. National School Counseling Week, sponsored by ASCA, highlights the tremendous impact school counselors can have in helping students achieve school success and plan for a career. National School Counseling Week is always celebrated the first full week in February.

What is hacking? Hacking is tackling an important problem by creating an innovative and elegant solution. We are asking students to how we might improve the 4 Squares of Learning, Character, Community, and Joy in Quarter 4 at our high schools? 

What do we need?

1. We need students!

2. We need parents and community members!
We are seeking parents and community members interested in being on a panel of judges to hear student pitches of prototyped projects. We are also seeking help with logistics and administrative tasks throughout the day. If interested, please contact Nathan O’Neill at

Make Your Electives Count

Make Your Electives Count is a seminar series designed to inform students about Career and Technical Education also known as CTE.  English 1, 2 and 3 classes attended the day-long seminar hosted by Spring Valley's Office of Workbased Learning.  Students learned what courses to take toward CTE completion.  Many discovered that they had already taken courses that could easily pair with 1 or 2 others to complete a program of study.  Others were delighted to find that they could achieve "double-completion".  CTE completion is one of 9 criteria outlined by the SDE for students to receive their CCR or College and Career Readiness designation.  This year, more than 100 seniors will be honored as CTE completers.  These students have not only completed their CTE course work, but have also earned an industry credential to complement their programs of study.  Some interesting facts about CTE include:

Spring Valley's Domination at The University of SC Annual High School Math Contest


On Saturday, January 25th, 2020, the Spring Valley High School Math Team competed against 19 schools across the state at the annual USC HS Math Contest. Our students had an outstanding performance and they all represented our school very well. Participants included: Sid Gianey (Captain), Sparsho De (Co-Captain), Zachary Huang, Alex McDonald, Wesley Fletcher, Christopher Li, Aleena Chattha, Sahildeep Singh, Siri Avula, and Parth Desai.

Single Elimination Tournament

  • 16 students with the highest score in the written portion of the contest were selected to compete in the tournament. The top two players go head-to-head in the final round of the tournament.
  •  Spring Valley had 5 students place in the top 16:  Sid Gianey, Sparsho De, Zachary Huang, Wesley Fletcher, and Christopher Li
  • Sparsho De and Wesley Fletcher placed in the top 2 and Sparsho De went on to become the grand champion of the tournament.

Joshua Drews 2020 National Secondary Art Educator

Alexandria, VA—The National Art Education Association has named Joshua Drews, of Columbia, SC, to receive the 2020 National Secondary Art Educator Award. This prestigious award, determined through a peer review of nominations, recognizes the exemplary contributions, service, and achievements of one outstanding NAEA member annually at the National level within their division. The award will be presented at the NAEA National Convention in Minneapolis, MN, March 26-28, 2020.

NAEA President Thom Knab states, "This award is being given to recognize excellence in professional accomplishment and service by a dedicated art educator. Joshua Drews exemplifies the highly qualified art educators active in education today: leaders, teachers, students, scholars, and advocates who give their best to their students and the profession."

Also on Wednesdays at the Sandhills library is Woodsey Wednesday: Painting with Teens. Coming up next is a program where students will learn about Alma Woodsey Thomas, a black expressionist painter who taught art in Washington, DC. Students will create their own original paintings in her unique style. This event will take place on Wednesday, February 12 at 4:30 p.m. registration is required.

The Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) members competed during the FBLA District II Leadership Conference on Saturday, January 25th at North Augusta High School.  Students competed in 25 areas and ranked well enough in all of those areas to move on to the FBLA State Leadership Conference to be held in Charleston, SC during March 22nd-23rd. The Shahani Scholarship



This scholarship is given to honor and celebrate the formative impact that Spring Valley High School had on the academic success of Ashwin Shahani. Five Shahani Scholarships of $5000 each will be awarded to the Spring Valley High School class of 2020. The scholarship funding is designated to be used for on-campus room and boarding expenses.

Dr.Shahani is a 2008 graduate of the Spring Valley High School Discovery program and is currently an Assistant Professor at the University of Michigan. Ashwin joined the University of Michigan as Assistant Professor in September 2016. He earned his B.S. from Cornell University and his Ph.D. from Northwestern University, both degrees in the field of Materials Science and Engineering. It is at Northwestern, that Ashwin developed his passion for solidification science.

Recipients must have a GPA of 3.5 and should demonstrate that they could benefit financially from the scholarship. Applicants will attach 2 essays fo 2000 words or less each. In the first essay, the applicant should describe their career ambitions and in the second essay, the applicant should describe their outreach and leadership activities.

Spring Valley JROTC Dominates Drill Meet


Spring Valley Vikings JROTC teams competed in a combined meet at Ashley Ridge High School this past Saturday. Our Drill, Raider, and Academic Teams all competed against 10 other schools. Our academic team reached the semi-finals, and our Raider team finished in third place overall for the competition. Our State Champion Drill Team placed in 11 of 12 categories, winning a record 5 first place trophies and the overall Drill Team Competition. This is Spring Valley’s third victory in as many outings. Our next drill competition will be held at Charleston Southern University on 22 February while the Raider Team competes at Furman University on the same day. 

Spring Valley High School Named 2020 National Magnet School of Excellence for the Third Consecutive Year


Spring Valley High School, home of the Discovery and Explorations Magnet Programs, has been named a 2020 National Magnet School of Excellence by Magnet Schools of America, the national association for magnet and theme-based schools. Spring Valley was also named a National Magnet School of Excellence for 2018 and 2019 and a National Magnet School of Distinction for 2017.

The Discovery and Explorations magnet programs seek to provide our students with an innovative, academically challenging experience centered on rigorous mathematics and science education through unique, student-centered research and internship opportunities. Our educators strive to establish meaningful relationships with each student and family, set consistently high expectations for all learners, empower each student with the tools to reach his/her full potential, and continuously inspire exploration, discovery, and creativity in our students. Mr. Jeff Temoney and Dr. Michelle Wyatt will be recognized and receive a National Magnet School of Excellence Merit Award on behalf of the school during an awards ceremony held at Magnet Schools of America’s 38th National Conference hosted by Clark County Public Schools in Las Vegas, Nevada April 13-17, 2020.

Magnet School of Excellence Awards are only given to a select group of magnet schools. Schools of Excellence are eligible to receive monetary awards and are eligible to be named the nation’s top Elementary, Secondary, or New & Emerging Magnet School. One of the Schools of Excellence will also be selected to win $5,000 and the Dr. Ronald P. Simpson Distinguished Merit Award, which is considered the most prestigious magnet school award in the nation.

To receive a national merit award, members of Magnet Schools of America must submit a detailed application that is scored by a panel of educators. These schools are judged and scored on their demonstrated ability to raise student academic achievement, promote racial and socioeconomic diversity, provide integrated curricula and instruction, and create strong family and community partnerships that enhance the school’s magnet theme. Spring Valley Wins at the Midlands Collaboration Academic Quiz Meets


Spring Valley’s Quiz Bowl team won their first two matches of the 2019-20 Midlands Collaboration season at Lugoff-Elgin High School on January 7th, 2020 by defeating Lugoff-Elgin and Camden High Schools with scores of 36-17 and 31-28, respectively. Team members included Ahad Chattha (12), Sparsho De (11), Siddharth Gianey (12), JareerImran (12), Connor Myrick (12), Abhijith Nair, and Alyssa Williams (12). On January 21st, 2020, Spring Valley was again successful at the Midlands Collaboration second meet. They won their matches against North Central High School and Lugoff-Elgin High School with scores of 33-14 and 31-15, respectively. Team members included Ahad Chattha(12), Aleena Chattha (9), Parth Desai (10), Siddharth Gianey (12), Zachary Huang (10), Jareer Imran (12), and Abhijith Nair (12). The team is coached by Dr. Michelle Wyatt. The team competes again on January 28th. Congratulations to these students!
