The JV Girls defeated Lugoff-Elgin 45-15 last night to improve to 13-0 on the season. Great Teamwork. We were lead on offense by Malayah Montgomery with 15 points, Anaja Matthews added 8 points, Breanna Martinez and Cierra Wilson 7 points, Sabrina Martinez 6 points, and Tiara Sumpter 2 points. The JV Lady Vikings will be back in action on Monday, February 3, 2014 at home against Blythewood at 5:30 pm followed by the B-Team & JV Boys. Come out and support the Vikings!

Foundation Auction Coming Soon

Congratulations Brennan Ortiz
In our first attempt at competitive auto mechanics here at the new Spring Valley Automotive School, senior, Brennan Ortiz has placed as first alternate at the state finals round of the All Star Automotive Technology Competition. The finals will be held at Midlands Technical College on February 20th. Brennan has completed one full introductory course of the four offered here at Spring Valley. Way to go Brennan!
Summer Job Opportunities for Students
Fort Jackson is offering lifeguard training opportunities and summer employment for interested students. There are a few different opportunities, but the biggest need for right now is for summer lifeguards. There are various classes scheduled throughout the winter and spring and would love to have students from Spring Valley! Rescheduled Date for Meeting for Rising 9th Grade Families
The parent/student information session originally schedule for Wednesday, January 29th, has been rescheduled due to inclement weather. The meeting will be Wednesday, February 5th. This meeting is for rising ninth grade parents and students (current 8th graders) and is designed to help families prepare for high school. The meeting will be at 6:30 PM in the Auditorium. On Friday, the Lady Vikings defeated RNE 64-16. Leading the way was Akia Dunlap with 16 points, 5 rebounds and 6 deflections, followed by Cierra Carter with 14 points, 9 deflections and 5 steals. Joi Jones netted 8 points and 7 rebounds. Megan Davis added -7 , Bayleigh Ponds- 6 and Brittany Joyner- 4 points. Dominique Hill added 3 points followed by Mileesha Doctor, Brittany Evans and Keisha Greene with 2 each. Team record is 16-2 overall and 4-1 in the Region. Registration 2014-15 School Year Information
The School Counseling Department will begin the registration/course selection and IGP update for the 2014-15 school year in February. The registration guide is located on the Spring Valley web site under "Departments", "School Counseling" or click here for registration guide.
Current Juniors:
Juniors will be seen individually by appointment. Letters will be mailed to the student's residence. Keep in mind scheduling allows counselors to meet with each student for only 20 minutes, so please discuss your student's future plans in advance to prepare for the meeting. While counselors would like to accommodate request for change in appointments, time constraints do not allow for this.
Viking Parent University
Spring Valley’s School Counseling Department will be hosting an information night for parents and students on February 11 from 6:00-7:30 p.m. Speakers will present information on three different areas: Live, Learn and Work. The evening will begin in the multipurpose room on the second floor with a brief greeting from the School Counseling Director. Following will be three 20 minute round robin sessions for parents and students to attend.

JV team came up short last night against RNE. We were led in scoring tonight by Javondii Myers with 14 pts. ,Isaiah York 9pts. ,Kiyon Nelson 6pts., Desmond Williams, Demetrick Coney, Savvon Weston and James Wilds each had 2 pts.
Wrestling
The Viking Wrestling Team hosted Eau Claire and our rivals RNE last night for our Annual play for Kay Breast Cancer Awareness Match . The Vikings were victorious in both contests goings 2-0, but not with some drama. The dual against RNE came down to the last match, where freshman Mac Simpson secured the win by pin to lift the team to a 39-34 victory. The team is next in action here at Spring Valley on Saturday, Feb.1st as they host the Regional Dual Tournament.

The JV Lady Vikings defeated a tough Irmo team last night 37-36 to remain undefeated on the season 11-0. Great effort from the team on a come from behind victory. Irmo lead till the 3rd quarter and we were down 9-18 at one point in the game. The girls fought back to regain the lead and ultimately gain the victory. We were led on offense by Malayah Montgomery with 13 points, Breanna Martinez added 11 points, Anaja Matthews 6 points, Sabrina Martinez 4 points and Cierra Wilson with 3 points. The JV Lady Vikings will be back in action tonight as we travel to RNE at 6:00 p.m.

Sparkleberry Country Fair 2014 College Scholarship
The Sparkleberry Country Fair is once again generously offering high school students $1,000 college scholarships. The applications for seniors interested in applying can be found here. Community Education Classes
Registration has begun for
community education classes. You may
register until classes begin; however, early registration is recommended as
courses fill early. For further

Introduction to Computer Class: This course
is for the complete beginner and is the perfect starting point to help you with
a personal computer. You will learn
basic skills such as how to use a mouse and navigate around the desktop. From the first class, you will have your
hands on the keyboard and have plenty of time to practice and build your
confidence. Class limited to 10 persons.

for persons who have completed the Introduction to Computer Class and would

Mr. Ishmael Brown has been appointed to the position of Associate Vice President of the National Tutoring Association. The National Tutoring Association (NTA) is the oldest and largest organization that is solely dedicated to the advancement of tutors. NTA offers university approved training in certifying tutors, academic coaches, tutor trainers, and tutorial programs. Hats off to Ishmael Brown!
Junior Science & Humanities Symposium
Students from across South Carolina competed at the Junior Science & Humanities Symposium sponsored by the Department of Defense on Friday, January 17th at the University of South Carolina. Overall, there were 82 research projects and 27 high schools with students attending. Last Friday, the varsity girls defeated rival Ridge View by a whopping 83-37. It was by far the best team effort yet! Leading the way was Cierra Carter with 31 points followed by Briana Hill with 14, Bayleigh Ponds with 13 and Akia Dunlap with 10 points. Also contributing were Mileesha Doctor , Joi Jones , Keisha Greene and Dominique Hill with 7,4,2 and 2 respectively. Next, the Lady Vikings hit the road to play 3rd ranked Irmo. ( The Vikings are # 2)

Students Don't Forget to Turn in Your Textbooks
Students, to avoid fees for late textbooks, please make sure you turn in your Semester One textbooks as soon as possible. Books turned in after January 22, 2014 will be marked late.
Schedule Changes
SCHEDULE CHANGES:
Students please use the Google Form that was emailed to you to request a schedule change. With the first day of enrollment as the baseline, students who withdraw from a course within 5 days in a 90-day course or 10 days in a 180-day course will do so without penalty. Students who withdraw from a course after the time specified above shall be assigned a WF and the F will be calculated in the student's overall grade point average as a 61.
LEVEL CHANGES:
The 5 day limitation for withdrawing from a course without penalty do not apply to course or course level changes initiated by the administration of the school.
Please note these three additional guidelines:
- Level changes will be honored only when class space is available during the same time period requested. No level changes will be made after the first 6 weeks of school.
- When a student is failing a course with a grade of 0-61 and they are permitted to change from one course to another, they will transfer to the other course with a 61.
- When a student is permitted to change from one course level to another, the numerical grade in the first course is converted using the uniform grading scale. The transfer grade will be calculated as the appropriate percentage of the new course.
News From the Fee Office
Students who rented a calculator first semester with a “month to be returned” of January, will be charged a late fee January 22, 2014. The late fee of $20 will be added to the student’s fees. If your student needs to extend the contract, he/she needs to come to the fees office to update the Calculator Rental Agreement and pay the $20 rental fee. Students failing to return the calculator by the end of the year will be charged a replacement fee of $120. If your child needs to rent a calculator for the second semester, please have him/her go to the main office and request a Calculator Rental Agreement form. Calculators are issued after the agreement form is completed and a $20 payment is received. In order for your student to participate in graduation or extra-curricular activities, all fees and/or debts must be paid in full. The fees window is open to students before school, at lunch and after school. Please make arrangements to pay any outstanding charges immediately using cash, check, money order, and credit or debit card. Checks will not be accepted without street address or phone number. The Junior Varsity Lady Vikings improved to 10-0 last night by defeating Ridge View 34-14. Slow start to the first half but the girls played much better defensively the second half to turn the game around. We had several contributors on offense last night. We were led by Malayah Montgomery with 9 points, Sabrina Martinez added 7 points, Cierra Willson 5 points, Breanna Martinez and Denikwa Anderson both with 4 points, Tiara Sumpter with 3 points and Destiny Robinson with 2 points. John Jones Named 2013 National Coach of the Year
Coach John Jones has been selected as the 2013 NFHS Coaches Association National Coach of the Year in the sport of Boys Track & Field. The NFHS Coaches Association is the official professional organization for coaches of the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS). White House Student Film Festival
The White House is super-excited to announce the first-ever White House Student Film Festival: a video contest created just for K-12 students, and whose finalists will have their short films shown at the White House. Finalist videos may also be featured on the White House website, YouTube channel, and social media pages.
Film should address at least one of the following themes:
1. How you currently use technology in your classroom or school.
2. The role technology will play in education in the future.

Our leading scores were Jordan Bruner with 19 points, Marcus Hollway 12 points, John Miller 9 points and Kenneth Legette & Ja'lon Williams both added 4 points each. On Tuesday night at the Valley, the Lady Vikings defeated Blythewood 52-40 to up their record to 14-1 overall and 2-0 in the Region. Leading the way was Cierra Carter with 23 points and 10 rebounds. She also was 15 for 15 from the free throw line. Next in scoring was Akia Dunlap with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Briana Hill netted 7 points, followed by Mileesha Doctor with 4, Keisha Greene and Bayleigh Ponds added 3 points and Megan Davis followed with 2 points. Our next game is with rival Ridge View on Friday, January 17 at Ridge View.
