AVID Students Attend NBA AVID Day

On Friday, November 22, the Spring Valley AVID students attended the NBA AVID Day.  This event was hosted by the Charlotte Bobcats.  After arriving at the Time Warner Cable Arena in Charlotte, the students met members of the Bobcats Executive Staff and listened as they gave information about career selection and education preparation.  Students were also able to visit with colleges from NC and SC in a college fair at the arena.  One student, Destiney Jones, was selected to shadow a Bobcats Executive as they made the pre-game preparations.  She attended mascot, cheerleader, and player warm-ups, was announced at mid-court (even appeared on the jumbo-tron) and was on the court to high-five the visiting Suns.  At 7:00p.m., students were invited to stay and watch the Charlotte Bobcats take on the Phoenix Suns. Although the Bobcats lost the game, the experience they gave the students was a win!

Juniors Win Annual Powder-Puff Football Game

Spring Valley High School ladies proved that football isn't just for boys, as the classes faced off at the annual powder-puff football game on Thursday, November 14th.  The senior girls played the freshmen team first.  The freshmen put up a fair fight, but were no match for the determined seniors, winning with a final score of 20 to 6.  Next to play were the juniors and the sophomores, with the juniors claiming victory 12-0.  The last game was a competition against the seniors and the juniors. The seniors were tough, but the juniors claimed victory, and a year of bragging rights, with a sudden death overtime win 6-0 . The games were not only fun but also a wonderful way to collect canned food items and raised money for charities.

Congratulations to Olisa Ashford

Congratulations to Olisa Ashford, recipient of the Innovative Teacher Award! Mrs. Ashford and her student council members deserve a lot of credit and thanks for building community and spirit throughout the school year; no matter what we ask them to do or how little time they have, they get it done. Within the past two weeks, they have organized and implemented all RNE Days activities, kicked off Winter Days (they've already collected over 5,500 cans!), helped with our Veteran's Day activities, participated in the drama department's "Homeless Monologues" show, planned and carried out today's WACH Fox Spirit Squad segment, and put together (and will carry out) an extra pep rally in support of the football players. All this didn't take place from 8:40- 3:33, Mrs. Ashford and the students have been here day and night, weekdays and weekends. Thank you Olisa for all your hard work!

A Spring Valley tradition since 1984, Winter Days engages staff, students, parents, churches, area businesses, and more. The Denim, Blankets, and Coats Committee, chaired by Inez Nicholson, collects and donates these items to those less fortunate during the holiday season. This year the Committee's goal is to donate 2700 items and they will definitely need all of the help they can get.  If you have any denim, blankets, or coats (we are also accepting sweatshirts, fleeces, pullovers, sweaters, etc.) please donate them to this worthy cause. Donations can be brought to the school any day.   Students will be on hand to receive donations directly from cars in the drop off line on Wednesday, November 20th, Wednesday, December 4th, and Wednesday, December 11th. They will also be selling hot chocolate and baked goods! All of the donations and proceeds will go to Transitions, Salvation Army, God's Storehouse, and Oliver Gospel Mission. Thank you for your support and look for more information on Winter Days 2013 here at Viking Update.

Spring Valley Students Tour College Campuses

Before choosing the best college to attend, it is important for students to test the waters.  Making a college visit and touring the campus can be pivotal in a students decision to apply to a school. Rather than just reading about schools online, students get an unmatched opportunity to decide if they can envision themselves on that campus being part of that environment. During the Fall, Spring Valley's Career Information Center organizes college tours for juniors and seniors. Visit the Career Information Center for more information on college tours and the entire college application process.
